A proud U.S father named his son after a computer software term(术语).

John Blake Cusack, from Mocjogam, told the local newspaper the U.S. traditional way of adding “Junior” or “II’’ after a boy’s name was too common.

So, when his son was born last week, he decided on the name John Blake Cusack 2.0, as if he were a software upgrade(升级版)。

Mr. Cusack admitted that it took months to persuade his wife, Jamie, to accept the idea.

All the men, she said, felt the name was “cool” However, her women friends did not think so. “I think the women will end up liking it.” She said.

Mr. Cusack told the local newspaper he got the idea from a film called The legend of 1900, in which an abandoned baby is given the name 1900 to remember the year of its birth.

“I thought that if they can do it, why can’t we?”

After little John Version 2.0 was born, Mr. Cusack even sent a celebration e-mail to the family and friends designed to look as though he and his wife had created new software.

“I wrote things like ‘there a lot of new features(特点)from Version 1.0 with additional features from Jemie.’ ” he said. And he is already planning for his son’s future. “If he has a child, he could name it 3.0” he said.

Scientists are trying to make the deserts into good land again. They want to bring water to the deserts, so people can live and grow food. They are learning a lot about the deserts. But more and more of the earth is becoming desert all the time. Scientists may not be able to change the desert in time.

Why is more and more land becoming desert? Scientists think that people make deserts. People are doing bad things to the earth.

Some places on the earth don’t get much rain. But they still don’t become deserts. This is because some green plants are growing there. Small green plants and grass are very important to dry places. Can feeling of nostalgia (怀旧) be good for you? Or is it unhealthy to have a strong love for the past?

For years, medical experts have studied nostalgia and the reason for it. Many experts warn that too much nostalgia is harmful. They say linger(徘徊) in the past shows that a person is unhappy with his present life. These feelings keep the person from living his life to its fullest.

Dr. Louie Kaplan has written several books about nostalgia. She says these feelings often begin when a young person is between 13 and 19 years old.

“This is the time when you must face the loss of your childhood,” Kaplan says. “You see your new life is easily destroyed. But you think romantically about a golden past. You remember your childhood as a time when life was perfect.”

These feelings continue as a person gets older, Kaplan adds. She says many grown persons have a hard time keeping up with changes in the modern world, so they think back to their younger years. At that time the world seemed simple and more harmless.

Kaplan says these feelings are not always actually existing. The good old days weren’t always good. However, she says nostalgia can be helpful, if used properly

“Feelings of nostalgia can cause you to remember a time when you had high hopes and dreams,” Kaplan says. “It might give you the strong wish to catch those dreams today, in your present life.” She adds that nostalgia can prevent you from “cutting yourself off your aim.”

“At its best,” Kaplan says, “nostalgia has the idea for the future.” 19. According to the passage, feelings of nostalgia ________.
