GPS or Global Positi on System is a tech no logy for locati ng a pers on or an object in 3 dime nsional space any where on the earth or in the surr ounding orbit. GPS is a very importa nt inven ti on of our time on acco unt of the many differe nt possibilities it brin gs. The tech no logy is still adva ncing and new applicati ons are being developed to make full use of its pote ntial.
The GPS system works with the help of a satellite network. Each of these satellites broadcasts a specific sig nal quite like a no rmal radio sig nal. These sig nals that carry the locati on data are received by a low cost aerial (天线) which is then decoded by the GPS software.
The software is able to identify the satellite, its location in space and the time the signals take to travel from each satellite. The software then process the information it receives from each satellite to calculate the position of the receiver. The overall process is quite like traditional navigation (导航) methods. If you can draw lines from 3 predefi ned places on the map to where you are, you can ide ntify your positi on on map as the in tersect ion of these lin es, with in a margin of error.
The con sumer range of GPS soluti ons start with sophisticated car GPS systems ---- they can have
features like voice guidi ng, dyn amic route calculati on and in built features to load and update a map from a CD.
The handheld range includes GPS devices from companies such as Magellan and Garmin. These typically have maps stored in side and work well for outdoor use. However, the han dheld range does n 'tusu. have dyn amic route calculati on facility and so the user has to find his/ her route.
Ano ther applicati on that was laun ched in the market rece ntly has GPS worki ng in a PDA (pers onal digital assista nt). The PDA is desig ned to connect with a GPS receiver. This range is gen erally cheap, but the PDA based application is not very strong. There are also variants that use wireless Bluetooth conn ecti on. These can work both for pers onal n avigati on as well as in side a vehicle.
59. The passage mainly tells us readers _________ .
A. how GPS works and what we can use it for B. how good GPS is and how we can use it C. how widely GPS has bee n used in our life D. how importa nt and useful GPS is 60. We lear n from the passage that we can use GPS _____________ .
A. any where on the Earth B. on or n ear the Earth C. only in the ope n space D. only in the outer space
61. Which of the follow ing has NOT bee n men ti oned in the passage?
A. GPS can help give guida nee to car drivers. B. GPS locates positi on 100 perce nt accurate. C. GPS devices can be of very small size.
D. GPS can function I a pers onal digital assista nt.
62. Which of the follow ing shows the correct positi on of the GPS receiver?
(The circle in the center is the earth. ※^: satellite ★: receiver)
knows you must exercise regularly to maintain good health. In deed, stay ing physically fit is a big part o our culture. we consider ( or rightly so ) that healthy people are attractive people. Since most of us want to be attractive, there is no shortage of exercise clubs, trai ning videos, magaz in es a nd books offeri ng to help us stay physically fit.
Unfortunately, however, our culture doesn 'place the same emphasis on mental fitness. Although we worship men and wome n with strong, healthy-look ing bodies, we don 'have the same degree of respect or attract ion for smart, educated, men tally healthy people. This is a shame, because there are imme nse rewards fro people who have developed the ability to thi nk well.
If your mind is well trained and flexible, you will be able to un dersta nd a great deal of what happe ns
around you. And if you are also well educated ——that is, is you un dersta nd basic scie nee, mathematics, music, art, literature, history and so on —— you will find it much easier to make good decisions throughout your life. They are told what to do, what to think, how to spe nd their mon ey, and what they should and should not aspire (渴望) to in life.
In my opinion, if you want to live well, you must be able to use your mind well. For this reas on, I want you to be able to concen trate, to solve problems, to un dersta nd complex ideas, and to think clearly and quickly. Such
skills will make it easier for you to make in formed decisi ons, un dersta nd curre nt even ts, choose good frien ds, man age your money well, make wise Ion e-term decisi ons and appreciate music, art and literature.
The key to develop ing such skills is to enjoy lear ning, and to have the ability and motivatio n to teach yourself. 63. The writer of the passage feel disappo in ted that ________ .

D. being able to make good decisi ons in life

Dear Editor,
I am writi ng to tell you that it is a very good idea we resume the 7-day May Day holiday. By doing so, we can kill two birds with one stone. For one thing, we can stimulate con sumpti on, which will have a good effect on our economy, especially tourism industry. If we have a Ion ger May Day holiday this year, as a senior 3 stude nt, I would like to go back to the
