日的由来和习俗;通过阅读了解世界上许多节日的由来和庆祝方式并掌握阅读技巧,掌握分词,学会写投诉信。

学习重点:1. 学生能简单地谈论传统节日;

2. 学掌握Text A 中的词汇以及重点句型,基本理解文章意思; 3 学生掌握现在分词和过去分词的用法;

4. 学生掌握英文投诉信的书写格式及常用短语与句子。

学习难点:1. 学生掌握一定的听说技能;

Section I Oral Practice

Task 1 Brainstorming

List words and phrases about the following pictures, and share them with others. Teaching tips:

1. Ss read Speaking Task 1.

2. Ss list words or phrases about these pictures.

3. List the words or phrases on the board or invite students to write them on the board. 4. Teacher gives more supplements of the topic. Suggested words: Mid-Autumn Festival Lantern Festival Halloween Dragon Boat Festival Christmas Day celebration moon cake lantern riddles lunar pumpkin skeleton costumes

Task 2 Pair work

Talk about traditional festivals with your partner. You can take turns asking your partner the following questions. Describe a traditional festival in China. When it is celebrated? How it is celebrated? What you like about it? Teaching tips:

1. Give Ss 5 minutes to interview each other using the given questions or their own. 2. Teacher monitors and assists if necessary.

2. Ss prepare an oral report using their partner’s answers. 3. Some Ss present their reports. Model

If I had to describe a traditional festival, I would choose to speak about the Spring Festival. This festival is on the first day of the Chinese New Year. That is to say, that it is the start of a vacation for lots of people. The vacation will often last for 10 or 15 days. There are several reasons as for why I like the Spring Festival. Allow me to explain by mentioning some of them briefly. First of all, family members that have not seen each other for some time will get together at this time. Secondly, it is a very joyous time of the year, with best wishes being sent all around.

Task 3 Role play

Read the following conversation and role play it with a partner.

Situation: John and Liu Na are high school classmates, John is an exchange student. They are talking about traditional festivals in China. Teaching tips:

1. Nominate one or two pairs to role play the conversation. 2. Get the Ss practice the conversation in pairs. 3. Ask some Ss to role play the conversation in class.

4. Teacher gives some comments and emphasis the intonation and the pronunciation.

John: Spring Festival is the most important festival in China, isn't it? Liu Na: Yes, that's true.

John: How long is the holiday?

Liu Na: It depends. But usually it's about 15 days. John: Do you eat any special food for the festival?

Liu Na: Yes, dumpling is a must. There is also other food. For example, people eat chicken for good luck.

John: That's interesting. I'm told the Chinese firework is very beautiful, isn't it? Liu Na: Yes, it's really wonderful!

John: Oh, great! I hope I can spend this Spring Festival with you here in Beijing. Liu Na: I'm sure you'll have a good time.

Section III Reading Practice

Text A Read the passage and do the exercises. Teaching tips:

1. Get Ss to read the title of the passage and help them to guess the main idea of the passage.

2. Give Ss 5 minutes to learn the new words of this unit.

3. Lead Ss read the passage for the first time by ask them the following questions. ( What are origins of today’s festivals? / List festivals to celebrate the coming of spring.)

4. After Ss have finished the first reading, ask them to go over the passage again to finish Exercise A as soon as possible.

5. Then teach the key words and sentences structures in each paragraph with the following notes.

6. Finally, teacher goes over the main idea of the whole passage with the class, and get Ss read the passage individually by a third time.

Festivals and Celebrations

Most ancient festivals would celebrate the end of cold weather, planting in spring and harvest in autumn. Sometimes celebrations would be held after hunters had caught animals. At that time people would starve if food was difficult to find, especially during the cold winter months. Today’s festivals have many origins, some religious, some seasonal, and some for special people or events.
