A

Mom calls to let me know she is waiting for me outside my company. I walk outside to talk with her for a while and see how things are going today. Each day is an adventure when it comes to my husband Jim, but Mom is his willing friend.

Mom parked the car in the shade of a pear tree with the window on the driver's side rolled down. Jim is in the passenger seat, I use a home health service, but they can't offer anyone full-time, Jim's disease has progressed to the point where he can't be left alone, so Mom has come to the rescue. She has other things to do, but willingly volunteers to spend 2-3 days a week filling in for the hired caregiver.

Our house is in the countryside. Therefore, one caregiver refused to come back one day after work. Of course, it creates a bad situation. If a caregiver doesn't show up or shows up late, Mom will come. She likes the loneliness that some of the hired workers dislike.

When I get home from work, we have dinner and Mom brings out her guitar. She sits on a kitchen chair, playing the guitar and singing. “How did things go today?” I ask Mom. “Well, I'd say it's been a good day,” she replies, “We watched several TV programs. Jim only wandered out down the road three times today.” Actually, chasing Jim when he wanders out the door and down the road usually angers most of the hired caregivers.

The next morning, Mom gets up early. “See you next week,” she says. About ten o'clock, my phone rings. It's my mom. “Sharon called a little while ago and said she couldn't come today. She's having some kind of issue with her daughter.” “Again?” The service never has a backup. “Okay. I'll take off the rest of the day and come home.” “Don't do that!” Mom says. “I'll just stay another day.” I feel tears in my eyes. “Thanks, Mom. I love you.”

Your friendships are somewhat like your shoes. When you are little, your mother always tells you that you have to buy a size bigger because your feet will grow. Friendships are similar to that. When you are younger, you are gradually changing, growing, and developing as a person. Becoming more mature (成熟的) through great changes can cause friendships to change.

I am one of those people who have changed friends over time. As I grow and become a different person, I will find and lose people in my life just as you have to buy new shoes when you grow out of your old ones. Whether I gain a new friend or lose an old one, I become more and more aware of what I am looking for in a friend, or even a best friend.

Everyone has a different view on what friendship is and what qualities a good friend should have. When I was in preschool, my friend, who later became my best friend, often went out with me for a movie that we both enjoyed. I don't exactly remember all of the details, but she was my best friend for most of my years in preschool and elementary school.

I also look for people who are considerate. I want shoes that look good as well as feel comfortable. One former friend of mine only talked about herself. I always asked her how she was doing or how she felt about that math test, but she never returned the favor.

Lastly, I am more drawn to people who are friendly and can make me laugh. Even if the shoes are a little too big and I sometimes trip over in them, I can laugh

it off with my friends. Friendship is not possible without happiness. What is the point of having a friend that does not make you happy? Friends are supposed to help you through hard times. As you get older, you get to the point where you stop growing and settle into your favorite comfortable shoes that will last a lifetime.

5.Why are friendships like shoes when people are young? A.People treat friends the way they treat old shoes. B.People change friends just as they do that with shoes. C.People have many friends just like they buy many shoes.

D.People look for comfortable shoes just as they look for proper friends.

6.Whom did the writer like to make friends with when she was young? A.People who shared similar interests with her. B.People who liked watching movies with her. C.People who were good at communicating. D.People who could always be with her. When I was in preschool, my friend, who later became my best friend, often went out with me for a movie that we both enjoyed.

7.How did the writer feel when she was with her former friend mentioned in Paragraph 4?

A.Relaxed. B.Unconfident. C.Disappointed. D.Proud.

根据第四段的...only talked about herself. I always asked her how she was doing or how she felt about that math test, but she never returned the favor.

8.What might be the best title of the passage? A.Friendships are like shoes.

B.How to find your comfortable shoes? C.Always buy bigger shoes for your feet. D.What qualities should your friends have?

Amazing machines

Another great invention was the printing press. Before 1450, books were uncommon.
