When I was a child, I had to go to church and obey many other rules, though these rules at times caused resentment (怨恨). Perhaps the most extreme parenting decision my parents made for my four brothers and sisters and me was to create a home environment without a television.

We hated this decision at that time, because there was seemingly no way to keep this embarrassing fact a secret at school. Naturally, simple pleasures like cartoons, football games, and movies became huge novelties (新奇事物). I would go over to friends\

When I reached high school, my parents bought a television, though it had no cable. However, I did spend most of my childhood in a home without a television. In fact not having a television did contribute a great deal to my skills, and it also forced me to develop other valuable interests. We grew up in a small town, so my brothers and sisters and I spent time exploring streets, fields and woods. And of course I read and wrote and studied, which pushed me toward a career path.

So would I give a similar situation to my own children if I had them? I doubt it, at least not in the most extreme sense. I\连续剧) like The Wire. But

television or almost anything for that matter is unhealthy for kids. It can prevent them from living a full life. So maybe a reasonable answer is no cable or no video-game systems or simply setting the time limit, but I haven\exactly worked out how to confine it yet. Although some people are against my idea, we do need limits after all.

From the passage we can learn that ________. A、the author didn\B、the author\

C、not having a TV set brought the author many benefits D、few homes had a TV set when the author was a child

From the last paragraph, we can learn the author thinks that ________. A、children shouldn\B、children should be forbidden to watch TV

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项 (A 、B 、C 和 D )中,选出最佳选项。

In an ideal world, people would not test medicines on animals. Such experiments are stressful and

sometimes painful for animals, and expensive and time-consuming for people. Yet animal experimentation is still needed to help bridge vast gaps in medical knowledge. That is why there are some 50 to 100 million animals used in research around the world each year.

Europe, on the whole, has the world\严格的) laws on animal experiments. Even so,its scientists use some 12 million animals a year, most of them mice and rats, for medical research. Official

statistics show that just 1.1 million animals are used in research in America each year. But that is misleading.

The American authorities do not think mice and rats are worth counting and, as these are the most common laboratory animals, the true figure is much higher. Japan and China have even less comprehensive (全面的) data than America.

Now Europe is reforming the rules governing animal experiments by restricting the number of animals used in labs. Alternatives to animal testing, such as using human tissue or computer models, are now strongly recommended. In addition, sharing all research results freely should help to reduce the number of animals for scientific use. At present, scientists often share only the results of successful experiments. If their findings do not fit the hypothesis (假设) being tested, the work never sees the light of day. This practice means wasting time, money, and animals\

Animal experimentation has taught humanity a great deal and saved countless lives. It needs to continue, even if that means animals sometimes suffer. Europe\reduce the number of animals used in experiments and improve the way in which scientific research is conducted.

What is the main idea of this passage?

A、The success of animal experiments should be ensured. B、A ban on the use of animals in the lab should be enforced.

C、Greater efforts need to be taken to reduce the number of lab animals. D、Scientists should be required to share their research results with each other.

Which of the following statements is true about animals used in the lab? A、America uses only about 1.1 million lab animals per year. B、Europe does not use mice and rats as lab animals at all. C、Britain does not use as many lab animals as China does.

D、Japan has limited data on the number of lab animals used each year.

Which of the following is mentioned as an alternative to replace animal experiments? A、Statistical studies. B、Computer models. C、DNA planted in animals. D、Tissue from dead animals.
