An optical phase modulator comprises a ribbed waveguide formed of silicon. The waveguide is doped to form a PN junction extending the length and height of the of the rib 12. Terminals 57, 59 are provided which enable a reverse bias to be applied to the PN junction and thereby extend the carrier depletion region 63 to alter the refractive index. The PN junction is offset from the centre of the rib, but the depletion zone 63 extends over the central axis 65 of the waveguide. 主权项：
