Starter Unit 2 What’s this in English?

I. Teaching Contents: What’s this in English? II: Analysis of the Teaching Material 1. Status and Function

In this unit students learn to ask how to say and spell words in English and the letters Ii-Rr. The topic of this unit is about things around people, and the students can learn how to identify things. Teaching Aims and Demands

a) Knowledge Objects

(1) To master the letters I-R;

(2) To master how to identify things and spell words; (3) To learn “what” question.

b) Ability Objects

To improve students’ ability of listening, speaking and writing.

2. Teaching Difficult Points

(1) To master the key vocabulary and the target language presented in this unit;

(2) Pronunciation of letters A, E, I, O; (3) Listening and speaking practice. 3. Teaching focuses

(1)To learn how to read and write the letters Ii-Rr; (2)To learn “what” question;

(3)To learn to ask how to say and spell words. III. Language Function

Talk about how to identify things and spell words IV. Target Language

What’s this in English? It’s a key.

Spell it, please. K-E-Y.

Five periods

The First Period

I .Teaching Aims and Demands 1.Knowledge objects

(1)To learn the letters I-R;

(2) Key structures: What’s this in English?

It’s a key/an orange.

(3)Listening and speaking practice 2. Ability objects

To train students’ ability of listening and speaking. II. Teaching Focuses

1. To learn the letters I-R; 2. To learn “what” question III. Teaching Difficulties Key structure & Pair work IV Teaching Procedures Step 1.Greetings

Let the students greet each other and introduce themselves in English. Step 2. Presentation

Present a conversation and practice it with the help of a map. What’s this in English? It’s a map/an orange. Step 3. Listening practice

SB page7 Activity1a Listen to the conversation. Then let the students act out

the conversations in pairs. Make sure the students understand what they should do.

Step 4. Presentation

Show some objects or pictures to teach some new words: jacket, key, map, orange, pen, quilt, ruler Step 5. Pair work

Let students make their own conversations with these new words in pairs, then ask them to act out. Step 5. Presentation

(1) Review the letters A-H;

(2) Learn the letters I-R. Pay attention to the pronunciation and writing. Step 6. Practice

Consolidate the pronunciation and writing of letters through exercises: SB page8 Activity 2a&2b Step4:Games time

看谁快 这是一个训练学生听字母的游戏,将全班分成两组,一组学生持大写字母,另一生持小写字母,教师快速念字母,要求持有该字母的学生迅速站起来,最先站起来的两分,后站起来的得一分,没站起来的得零分,得分多的组获胜。 Step 7. Homework

Read and write the letters I-R & remember the new words. 教学反思:本节课学习了字母I-R的读音和书写,让学生运用What’s this in English? It’s a key/an orange.进行问答,游戏环节的设置,使课堂达到了小高潮。

The Second Period

(1) To review the letters I-R;

(2) To review “what” question and key vocabulary learned in last period; (3) To learn how to use “a” and “an”. 2. Ability objects

To train students’ ability of listening and writing; II. Teaching Focuses

1. The usage of “a ” and “an”; 2. The letters I-R; 3. Listening exercises. III. Teaching Difficulties

The usage of “a ” and “an”. IV Teaching Procedures Step 1.Revision

Review the letters I-R. Step 2.Practice

Consolidate the pronunciation and writing of letters through exercises: 1. Listen and number the letters they hear.

2. SB page8 Activity 2d Write the small letters for the big letters. Step 3. Group work

1. Discuss what these letters (P, NBA, kg) mean in groups.

2. Ask the students to say out where we can find English words or English names around us and what they are.What’s the meaning of them? Maybe the students can list a 1ot.If they couldn’t,give them some notes such as: USA am pm cm MTV

Step 4. Presentation

1.Present the usage of “a” and “an” with conversations: What’s this in English? It’s a map/It’s an orange.

2. Explain the differences between “a” and “an”. Step 5. Listening practice

Play the tape for the students and then check the answers. 1. SB page9 Activity 4a Listen and number the pictures. 2. SB page9 Activity 4b Listen and complete the words. Step 6. Pairwork

Let students talk about the things in activity 4a. Step 7. Game

SB page9 Activity 5 Listen and draw lines between the letters the hear. Step 8 Homework

1. Practice how to identify things in pairs. 2 Copy the letters I-R and the new words.

The Third Period

(1) To review the letters A-H; (2) Target language:

A: What’s this in English? B: It’s a key. A: Spell it, please. B: K-E-Y.
