Adrianna Edwards used to have to walk four and a half long hours in order to get to work every day. Edwards, who works at a Denny’s restaurant in Galveston, Texas, had been saving to buy herself a car so she would no longer have to make the 14-mile journey to and from her job.

Thankfully, the hardworking waitress now has a new car to call her own but it’s not one that she bought with her own money.

An elderly couple who Edwards had been serving at her restaurant earlier this week decided to buy a car for their hardworking waitress after they learned about her long journey to work.

Hours after they paid their bill generously (慷慨地), they returned to the restaurant with a 2019 Nissan Sentra and handed the keys to a surprised Edwards. Their only condition for the gift was that Edwards should simply pay the good deed forward.

Now that she is freed from having to buy a car, Edwards says that she will be able to put herself through college much sooner than she expected and she is already planning on using her good luck to help others.

“I still feel like I’m dreaming. Every two hours, I look out of my window to see if there’s still a car there,” Edwards said. “When I see somebody in need, I’ll probably be more likely to help them out, to do everything that I can to help them out.”

24. How did Edwards once go to work every day? A. By bus. B. By car. C. On foot. D. On a bike. 25. How did Edwards get the car? A. She bought it herself. B. A couple offered it to her. C. Colors may be widely connected with certain emotions, a study has found. Red is related to love or anger, blue to sadness or black to death, and similar links appear to exist all over the world.

Scientists from the universities of Switzerland and Germany carried out their research on 711 people. The volunteers came from different countries, and answered to rate how colors made them feel.

The colors included in the study were white, black, grey, red, yellow, green, blue, orange, purple, pink and brown. And people rated how closely they related them to different emotions.

The researchers, led by Dr. Daniel Oberfeld, wrote, “Red is connected with both positive and negative (消极的) emotions while black is connected with negative emotions.” Other colors which had strong connections across countries were pink with love, grey with disappointment or sadness and orange with Joy or pleasure.

3

Some other colors, however, had a little different connections. For example, people in Greece were far more likely to connect purple with sadness than those in other countries. While people in the UK and Germany strongly connected yellow with joy, Greek and Chinese people did not feel the same link.

Almost all the colors, even if they didn’t have a strong link to one emotion, were either good or bad— with the exception of red, which was linked to both anger and love, and purple and brown, which were neither.

Dr. Oberfeld’s team added, “Across the 240 color-emotion pairs, the strongest connection was found between the emotion love and the color term red.” 28. What’s the text mainly about? A. Colors and emotions. B. Emotions and images. C. colors and personalities. D. Emotions and nationalities. 29. Which country is he probably from if a person relates purple to sadness? A. China. B. Greece C. UK. D. Germany. 30. Which of the following is not related to either good or bad emotions? A. Grey. B. Red. C. Yellow. D. Brown. 31. Where is this text most likely from? A. A news report. B. A wellness book. C. A research report. D. An advertisement.

Whether in a supermarket or a shopping centre, many of the prices are likely to have something in common. Prices are more likely to end in .99 than in any other pair of numbers. We probably don’t think twice about buying something for $ 5.99 or $ 16.99, but it is a little strange when you think about it. Why aren’t prices just even dollar amounts? Is it an elaborate marketing strategy to get you to spend more? Well, basically.… yes. But there’s really nothing “elaborate” about it: it’s actually pretty simple. “It’s a type of psychological (心理的) pricing,” says Julie Ramhold, consumer analyst (消费者分析师). “Because we read from left to right, we pay less attention to the end of the number.” This is especially effective if you’re just quickly perusing several prices in a row (连续地); the first number will surely stand out to you more. Psychological pricing is powerful. When we see a price of $9.99, we relate it as part of the $.9 $.9.99 range (范围) rather than the $10 $10.99 range. Consumers don’t want to go beyond a certain limit, so even a penny less may make a huge psychological difference.

Of course, there are some prices that do end in even dollar amounts, but it usually is a designed choice. Some high-end sellers think $ .99 seems cheaper, so they choose to avoid this. They will price things evenly to make it seem like the items are particularly good quality.”

So how to avoid falling into the .99 trap? Well, make sure you’re reading the full price sign of something before you buy it.

32. What’s the suitable title of the text? A. The program of marketing B. The way to come out of the .99 trap C. The strategy of attracting customers D. The reason why most prices end in .99 33. Why do many prices end in .99? A. To bring luck. B. To draw attention. C. To show respect for customers. D. To get customers to spend more. 34. What does the underlined word “perusing” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Reading. B. Writing. C. Reducing. D. Changing. 35. What’s paragraph 2 mainly about? A. How the .99 trap works. B. What psychological pricing is.

4

C. How we become a wise customer. D. Why customers don’t like even dollar amounts. 第二节 (共5小题; 每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

E-learning

Courses that are taught through the Internet, or online courses, have become popular in many countries. 36 But most show a video of a teacher and students in a classroom. Students watch the video online and take part in online activities. Some courses are free and open to anyone, giving students anywhere the chance to study at any time.

37 Some schools in Singapore, for example, have tablets (平板电脑) and touchscreens instead of books and blackboards in the classrooms. There are also social media platforms (平台) to help the students work together on projects, and online “worlds” where the students can interact with each other and the digital environment while completing different tasks.

38 The teachers are in their home countries and are connected to the Korean classrooms through the Internet. Instead of looking at a screen, the students interact (互动) with a robot in the classroom. The robot is controlled by the teacher and can move around the classroom and talk with students. It is unlikely that robot teachers will replace real teachers. 39

These important examples show us that e-learning can be successful. Thanks to technology, more and more ways of teaching and learning are being developed. 40 However, one thing is for sure there has never been a more interesting time to be a student. A. There’s a golden rule of the Internet.

B. There are different kinds of online courses.

C. Students are more likely to take part in a real class.

D. Other kinds of e-learning are being tested around the world. E. Nobody knows what the classroom of the future will look like. F. But like online learning environments, they can be useful tools.

G. In South Korea, some students are taught English by teachers abroad.

My daughter’s birthday is May 29. On Thursday the entire family was busy packing the presents and putting funny pins (别针) on them. I promised my little princess that I would wake her up early in the morning and deliver the presents to her classmates.

I woke up at 5:30. After a bath, I planned to wake her up…but... as I came out from the bathroom, I realized an earthquake struck. I cried to wake my husband up and asked him to carry my daughter out of our house. We were watching our house shaking from outside. It happened for just 3 minutes, but some cracks appeared on the wall.

However, as we had planned, I went to my daughter’s school at 8:00 but no one was there except the teacher who warned us to get back to our house as tsunami might come soon.

Arriving at my house, I was wondering about the presents: to whom we should deliver? After some discussion, we decided to give them to the children in hospital. Entering the hospital, I was really shocked. There were thousands of people bleeding (流血) and lying outside the rooms, many of them bandaged (用绷带包扎).

A boy came over with a bandage on his head.

听力录音稿

Text 1

M: Hi, can I speak with Mr. Johnson, please?

W: He’s out with our son. He’ll be back later on tonight. Can I take a message? Text 2

M: By the way, may I have my breakfast in my room? I’m not an early riser.

W: Of course, sir. Just ask for room service, and they’ll see to it that you wake up to enjoy your order at any time. Text 3

W: Hi. Jimmy. You’re here early. You seldom come to work before 8:00.

M: My dog woke me up at 6:00 today. He usually waits until 7:00, but I guess he wanted his breakfast early today. Text 4

W: May I have a word with you?

M: You’ve caught me at a bad time. I am writing a report and have to finish it within an hour. W: You really like leaving things to the last minute. Text 5

W: Jim, I can’t go to the theatre with you tonight. M: Why not, Mary?

W: I have to make dinner for my family, because my mother is sick. Text 6

W: Well. I really love to travel. Uh, every year I go somewhere new. I never go to the same country twice.

8

I think my favorite part is probably trying new foods, don’t you?

M: Yeah, but the best thing about traveling, I find, is the people that you meet.

W: Oh, that’s true. I’ve met some great people. Um, well, see, I try to travel by train rather than by car or by plane. And that way you always meet lots of new and interesting people. Text 7

W: We’re going to do something different for Thanksgiving this year. Instead of going to Mom’s house, we’ve decided to all go out to dinner.

M: Oh, Okay. I like having a home-cooked meal, though, and we go to Mom’s every year. Why did you both decide to go to a restaurant?

W: Mom says that she’s tired of cooking everything.

M: Well, we can go over and help her out. Or we can just have it at my house instead. My kids would love to help cook for their grandma.

W: You can talk to her yourself, then. She seems to have made up her mind to go to a restaurant this year. M: Okay, I’ll give her a call. Have you talked to Dad, yet? W: No, but I think he wants to go out, too. Text 8

W: Hi! We’re back! Anybody home? Phillip? Susan? M: Hey, what’s that?

W: Oh, it’s a note from Claudia. It says “Hi! There’s a cool new restaurant near my office. Let’s have dinner there together my treat! The name is Giovanni’s and it’s on West Houston Street between MacDougal’s and Sullivan’s. You can’t miss it! The traffic is terrible down there. You’d better not drive. Take the subway!”

M: Oh, it sounds like fun. Let’s go! Text 9

W: John, I know that you’re interested in all things to do with the environment. Can you tell us something about it?

M: Oh, yes, I could think of one or two things that I’ve tried to do over the last couple of years. I think it’s been a couple of years since I got my bicycle out of the garage, and now I use it as much as possible. I use my car less. Last year I drove 10,000 miles, and this year I’m going to do about 10% fewer miles.

W: OK. Now we’re going to talk about food. I know you seldom eat meat. Is this part of being “green”, or something totally different?

M: Erm..… Yes and no. Looking after animals, I think, is as important as looking after the environment. I mean, they’re part of it. So I prefer not to kill animals to eat them.

W: Mm. I think it’s true that people all over the world are becoming more aware of the need to look after the planet. Thank you very much. Text 10

W: The Gili Islands are three small islands off the northwest coast of Lombok, Indonesia. The islands are popular with tourists. Cars and motorbikes are not allowed, and people get around on foot or by bicycle. There is beautiful ocean life around the islands. People only began to live on the islands in the 1970s. Before that, there wasn’t much fresh water, and the islands were full of wild animals. Some travelers discovered the islands in the 1980s and tourism began to develop. In 2000, an organization called the Gili Eco Trust was set up to help protect the areas around the islands. From then on, many other organizations have been set up to educate people about problems on the islands, such as waste and overfishing. The islands cannot be reached by plane, so people have to take boats directly from Lombok to get there.
