An old African-American woman was standing on the side of the highway on a rainy night. Her car broke down, and she really needed a ride. After waiting for half an hour, a young white man stopped to help her. It’s unusual because the black and the white are thought to be in the racial conflict（种族冲突）in the 1960s.
The man took her to a safe place and helped her get a taxi car. She seemed to be very hungry, so
the white man gave her some bread. She wrote down his address, thanked him and went away. Several days went by and a knock came on the man’s door. To his surprise, a color TV was sent to his home.

Passage 2
During an experiment，a biologist put a shark and several small fish into a large tank(容器). After the shark found the small fish， it began to attack and eat them. The biologist then placed a strong piece of clear glass into the tank，creating two separate parts. She put the shark in one part of the tank and a new group of fish in the other.
The shark quickly attacked. This time，however，the shark knocked into the glass divider. The shark kept this behavior every few minutes but it failed. Meanwhile，the small fish swam around safely in the other part. About an hour later，the shark gave up. This experiment was repeated several times over the next few weeks. Each time，the shark got less aggressive(攻击性) and didn’t want to try attacking the small fish，until the shark got tired of hitting the glass divider and simply stopped attacking.
The biologist then removed the glass divider，but the shark didn’t attack. The shark was trained to believe there was a barrier between itself and the small fish. So the fish swam wherever they wished， without danger. In fact， after experiencing failures，we may stop trying. We believe that
we were unsuccessful in the past，so we will always be unsuccessful. In other words，we continue to see a barrier in our heads，even when there is no “real” barrier between where we are and where we want to go.

Brian loved watching comedies and dreamed to become a comedy actor one day. When he heard
about the talent show to be held at his school, Brian decided to take part in. He had never acted on stage before, and he was very excited at first.
“You are not funny but silly,” Ken, one of his classmates, said to him. “No one will like what you do,” another boy also said to him loudly. Brian couldn’t understand why they were so unkind to him. For a moment, he thought about giving up the show. But he remembered how much he liked comedies. So he decided to prepare for the show. Brian did a great job at the talent show. Everyone loved his performance.
Even so, Ken told Brian that he was not funny, and he would never be successful. Brian was sad in the beginning, but he realized that what he did had nothing to do with others. He confidently continued working towards his goal.
As the years went on, Brian met more people like Ken. “You’ll do a terrible job,” they said to
him. Luckily, most people encouraged him and some helped him to become even funnier. His fans thanked him because his comedies made them feel good when they were unhappy. Now Brian is a famous comedy star! He is doing what he loves best. He never feels stressed like those unkind people, and he laughs all day long!
