A
Celebrations and traditions hold a special place in a country. It is a way for people to express themselves.Besides the national festivals and celebrations, many places enjoy some strange celebrations. Here are just four strange festivals:
Todd River Race
If you want something quieter, take a trip to Alice Springs in the dry heart of Australia. There you will find the Todd River Race in a riverbed that normally has no water. The boats are bottomless and without paddles,or motors. They are usually constructed from beer cans, which have been eagerly emptied by the boat builders. The teams run up the riverbed with their feet sticking out of the bottom of their boats. In 1993 the race was cancelled because of the threat of a once in a blue moon rainstorm.
Sauna(桑拿浴)Bathing Championships
If you prefer it hot,Finland is the place for you to compete in the Sauna Bathing
Championships.Every 30 seconds the heat is turned up,but the contestants must keep their naked(赤裸的) bottoms firmly on the wooden seat, while remaining seated in an upright position. The last person left in the sauna is the winner. The La Tomatina Festival
Every August thousands of Spaniards take part in the La Tomatina Festival in Bu?ol.Truckloads of tomatoes are pulled in each year and unloaded in the city centre.People throw tomatoes at each other for the whole day.The only rule is that the tomato must be flattened in the hand first, before being thrown.Even elderly grandmothers have been known to take part.
The Naked Festival
Japan hosts the Naked Festival. All male contestants are dressed in oversize diapers(纸尿裤) and parade through the winter streets.Bystanders throw cold water over the contestants, who drink a great amount of sake,a Japanese alcoholic drink made from rice,in an effort to stop them from freezing.

Some say festivals express something about the people who celebrate them. However,I think it is important as a universal community that we respect how and what others choose to celebrate,as each festival meets a particular need in the individuals of that country and becomes a part of their way of life.

An evergreen tree is a Christmas tradition in many American homes. The tree is usually a pine or fir dressed with lights and other colorful decorations.
Families might buy a cut tree or go to a tree farm and cut one down themselves. Some people bring a live tree in a pot into their home for the holidays and then put it back outdoors. Some people rent a Christmas tree.Companies might bring the same live tree to the same family year after year.Or the tree might get planted in a park or someplace else where it could help the environment.
There are some trees that can be reused year after year because they are made of plastic or metal.Or,instead of a tree, some people have a small,sweet-smelling rosemary(迷迭香) plant, cut to look like a little Christmas tree.
Another plant that many people connect with Christmas is the poinsettia(一品红).Poinsettias are native to Mexico. They can be white or pink, but most are bright red. They are named after the first American ambassador to Mexico.Joel Poinsett liked them enough to send some back to the United States.Babies or pets that chew on poinsettias might get sick. But experts say the plant is not as poisonous as some people think.
Like millions of other houses, the home of America’s first president is decorated for
Christmas.George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate is in Virginia.Visitors can hear stories about what Christmas was like at Mount Vernon in the eighteenth century. The museum where visitors begin their tour is decorated with Christmas trees.
