Warming Up & Reading — Pre-reading

A

Amber has a degree in business management and economics. She put her skills to good use when she spent eleven months in Cambodia (柬埔寨) through World Hope International as a volunteer working with a local micro-finance (小额信贷) company to help the poor get financial services.

Amber's first few weeks in Cambodia was busy and difficult as she tried to learn the language, understand the culture and get used to her new surroundings. Her volunteer service involved working

with a local micro-finance company. In addition to writing plans, preparing international marketing materials and building donor (捐赠人) relations, Amber met with company clients. During these visits she learned how the small loans they received transformed their lives. She learned first-hand the benefits of micro-finance, which by providing farmers and small-business owners with affordable working capital (such as money to buy a sewing machine) helped them to earn their way out of poverty (贫穷).

“It never stopped amazing me when a client would show me a new home that was built because of a loan he received or the way a client's business had improved and thus allowed his children to be sent to school,” Amber said.

Amber recalled that one client called Paul walked her all around his house, pointing to what he had done with each of eight loans he'd received. He explained how every loan had improved his family's quality of life. Amber said he was one of the hardest-working men she had ever met. He had suffered greatly in the Cambodian Civil War and became disabled, but not once did he let it kill his dreams of realizing a better life for his family. His latest purchase, a sound system that he rented out for weddings and other parties doubled his income!

Amber said,“Living and working in Cambodia helped me see the world in new ways and made me aware of the hardship and suffering that many people around the world face every day. Those eleven months were some of the most meaningful months of my life.”

1.What's the best title for this passage? A.World Hope International B.Benefits of Micro-finance

B

“Please read this,” my three-year-old Claire said one day, pointing to a page with an old children's song:“Do you know how to plant cabbages”. In blue ink, someone had crossed out cabbages and written “Watermelons!”

“Daddy! Did you do that?” Claire asked, looking up with an expression of shock. We had only recently asked her not to write in books, and suddenly here was proof that her parents weren't practicing what they asked. I told her it was written by my grandfather and sat down to tell the story.

I grew up on Grandad's farm in Nebraska, America. One afternoon, I decided to plant some watermelons.

“Hmm, there's a crop I haven't tried!” Grandad smiled. “Let's do it now!” With Grandad's help I planted the seeds.

The next morning, I found a big watermelon there. I knew it was Grandad that put a watermelon there and I thought he had played a joke on me.

Later that month, Grandad gave me a book.“For school,” he said seriously. I opened it to where he'd written “Watermelons!” and laughed at another of his jokes.

Claire listened quietly to the story and asked to plant seeds too, so I took her to buy some seeds. On the walk home, I realized for the first time that Grandad could have met my childish enthusiasm with some disappointing facts such as that watermelons don't grow well in Nebraska or that it was too late to plant them anyway. But instead of doing that, he had stolen back into town that afternoon and bought the biggest melon on the market. That night, after I was asleep, he had awkwardly unloaded it and, with a painful bend, placed it exactly above my seeds. He made sure I experienced the “Wow.”

I had always thought the midnight miracle (奇迹) was just one of Grandad's jokes. Now I realized he had planted hope that day. As Claire planted the seeds happily, I watched my grandfather's joy take fresh root in her life. And that was the biggest miracle of all.

5.Claire was shocked at the mark on the page because______. A.her great-grandfather did something her parents forbad B.she thought her parents didn't act as they said C.someone preferred watermelons to cabbages D.there should be a mistake in the book

根据第二段中的“We had only ... what they asked.”

6.Why did Grandad put a watermelon where the author planted seeds? A.Because he didn't want to waste the watermelon. B.Because he didn't want to disappoint the author. C.Because he wanted to make fun of the author. D.Because he wanted the author to be a farmer.

Grandad could have met my childish enthusiasm with some disappointing facts ... But instead of doing that ... He made sure I experienced the ‘Wow.’”

7.Which of the following best describes Grandad? A.Talented and reliable. B.Generous and patient. C.Determined and happy. D.Caring and humorous.

8.What's the best title for the text? A.Grandfather's great love B.The day we planted hope C.Set children a good example D.Happy memories of childhood

C Mind control

Imagine looking at something and being able to move it just by using your brain! That is exactly what the new technology called BrainGate can do - with the help of a robotic arm, anyway.

BrainGate is the idea of Professor John Donoghue and his team of researchers at the Brown Institute for Brain Science, USA. BrainGate is attached directly to the brain. First of all, gold wires are put into the part of the brain that controls

movement. These are then connected to a small computer chip (芯片). When the person thinks about different movements, this creates electrical signals, which are picked up by the chip. After this, the signals that are created by the brain are sent back to a computer, which changes the signals into movements. Finally, the computer uses the robotic arm to carry out these movements. BrainGate can already be used to write an e-mail or play computer games, just by brain power.

The technology has already cost millions of dollars to develop and when it is available for use, it will probably cost thousands of dollars per person. There are still many challenges ahead for Donoghue and his team. They are currently planning a mini wireless version, which will allow people to be connected to the computer at all times. Donoghue also dreams of using this technology to help disabled people who can't move their arms or legs. He plans to connect BrainGate directly to their own paralysed limbs This will mean that the person can control their own body again, without relying on a robotic arm.

This research is attracting the military's (军方的) attention as well. However, it is easy to understand why scientists might be concerned about how thought-controlled machines could be used by the military.

9.What does the underlined word “These” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A.Wires. C.Thoughts.

B.Brains. D.Movements.

根据第二段中的“gold wires are put into the part of the brain that controls movement ... then connected to a small computer chip”可知,首先是把一些金线跟控制运动的那部分大脑连接,然后再把“这些线”跟一个小的电脑芯片连接。

10.According to the text, what is one of BrainGate's disadvantages? A.It is too expensive. B.It needs improvement. C.It is difficult to control. D.It produces few movements.

根据第三段中的“The technology ... dollars per person.”

11.How will Donoghue help disabled people?
