If there is no difference in general intelligence (智力) between boys and girls, what can explain girls’ poor performance in science and mathematics?
It seems that their treatment at school is a direct cause.Mathematics and science are seen as subjects mainly for boys, and therefore,as girls become teenagers, they are less likely to take them.Interestingly, both boys and girls often regard the subjects for boys as more difficult.Yet it has been suggested that girls do not take mathematics courses, not because they are difficult, but for social reasons.Girls do not want to be in open competition with boys because they are afraid to appear less feminine (女性的) and attractive.
However,if we examine the performance of boys and girls who have taken mathematics courses, there are still more high-achieving boys than there are girls. This difference appears to be
worldwide.Biological explanations have been offered for this, but there are other explanations, too.
Perhaps the difference which comes out during the teenage years has its roots in much earlier experiences. From their first days in kindergarten, boys are encouraged to work on their own and to complete tasks.Facts show that outstanding (杰出的) mathematicians and scientists have not had teachers who supplied answers.
Besides, there can be little doubt that teachers of mathematics and science expect their boy students to do better at these subjects than their girl students. They even appear to encourage the difference between boys and girls. They spend more time with the boy students, giving them more time to answer questions and working harder to get correct answers from them. They are more likely to call on boys for answers and to allow them to take the lead in classroom discussion. They also praise boys more frequently. All of these seem to encourage boys to work harder in science and mathematics and to give them confidence (信心) that they are able to succeed.
Such a way of teaching is not likely to encourage girls to take many mathematics and science courses, nor is it likely to support girls who do.When it comes to these subjects it seems certain that school widens the difference between boys and girls.

C.They showed mathematical abilities in their teenage years.
D.Their success resulted from their strong interest in mathematics. 63.The author would probably agree that________. A.boys and girls learn in the same way

If you think English means endless new words, difficult grammars and sometimes strange pronunciations, you are wrong.Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power.Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.
The study also found the effect is greater when the younger people learn a second language. A team led by Dr.Andrea Mecheli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five,as well as a number of later learners.
Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference.
“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,”said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills.“Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (灵活的),”he said,“You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”
The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of 2 and 34. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better.“Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists. 68.The main subject talked about in this passage is ________. A.science on learning a second language
B.man’s ability of learning a second language C.language study can help improve brain power D.language learning and maths study
69.In the second paragraph, the writer mentions “exercise” in order to ________. A.say language is also a kind of physical labor
B.prove that one needs more practice when he (she) is learning a language C.show the importance of using the language when you learn it
D.make people believe language learning helps grey matter work well 70.The word “bilinguals” (Paragraph 4) probably means ________. A.researchers on language learning B.second language learners
C.persons who can speak two languages D.active language learners
