For each of them are four choices marked A), B), C), and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

Questions31 to 35 are based on the following passage:

What makes a person a scientist? Does he have ways ---or tools ---of learning that are different from those of those others? The answer is no. It is not the tools a scientist uses but how he uses these tools that makes him a scientist. You will probably agree that knowing how to use a power saw is important to a carpenter. You will probably agree, too, that knowing how to investigate, how to discover information, is important to everyone. The scientist, however, goes one step further: he must be sure that he has a reasonable answer to his question and that his answer can be confirmed by other persons. He also works to fit the answers he gets to many questions into a large set of ideas about how the world works.

The scientist’s knowledge must be exact. There is no room for half right or right just half the time. He must be as nearly right as the condition permit. What works under one set of conditions

at one time must work under the same conditions at other times. If the conditions are different, any changes the scientist observes in a demonstration must be explained by the changes in the conditions. This is one reason that investigations are important in science. Albert Einstein, who developed the theory of relativity, arrived at this theory through mathematics. The accuracy of his mathematics was latter tested through investigation. Einstein’s ideas were shown to be correct. A scientist uses many tools for measurement. Then the measurements are used to make mathematical calculations that may test his investigations.

31. Albert Einstein built up his theory of relatively through . A. investigation B. experiments C. tests D. mathematics

32. A sound scientific theory should be one that .

A. works under one set of conditions at one time and also works under the same conditions at other times

B. leaves no room for improvement

C. does not allow any change even under different conditions D. can be used for many purposes

33. “…Knowing how to investigate, how to discovered information, is important to everyone.” The author says this to show . A. the importance of information B. the importance of thinking

C. the difference between scientists and ordinary people D. the difference between carpenters and ordinary people 34. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Scientists are different from ordinary people. B. The theory of relativity.

C. Exactness is the core of science.

D. Exactness and way of using tools are the key to the making of a scientist. 35. What, according to the passage, makes a scientist? A. The tools he uses. B. His ways of learning. C. The way he uses his tools. D. The various tools he uses.

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage:

Youth is not a matter of time but a matter of self-improvement, both physically and morally. Being a good youth, one should have those factors:the basic one is health. A healthy body is a kind of priceless treasure. One can do nothing without it. Secondly,we should pay essential attention to our moral character. We should be always willing to help those in trouble without any complaints. Moreover,we should care more about the people around us. Thirdly, cooperation and communication also play an important role in being a good youth. No one can live alone without any friends. And nobody can work out every problem without help of partners. So the youth should and must learn how to live and work well with others, including those people you don’t like to cooperate or communicate with. The last but not the least, patriotism, meaning a love of one’s country,is the one we should never forget. People always misunderstand the word “patriots” by thinking it only refers to those fighters who fight for their country. As a matter of fact,a patriot will do the things his country asks him to do. So being a youth is one thing, being a good one really needs to take every effort to make yourself to be.

36. A good youth should help others _________. A. willingly B. at his convenience

C. if he wants to D. with complaints

37. In the author’s opinion,the patriots must ________ .

C. important to everyone D. not necessary to good friends 39. The passage really wants to tell us that ________.

A. what the meaning of “patriots” is B. the qualities a good youth should have C. a youth should be doing good D. one should help others 40. The first thing a good youth should have is ___________. A. the best looking B. the best riches C. the good ability D. a healthy body

Questions41 to 45 are based on the following passage:

In England and Wales alone, over 7,000 people each year die in home accidents. Old people have special safety problems. Falling a is potential hazard: for example, 1,468 women over 75 in England and Wales died in the one year after falling—not downstairs, but on the same level. There are a number of ways of guarding against this: avoiding hard things on the floor, like steel fenders and knobby furniture, avoiding trip-traps like rug edges, door mats and trailing wires, using special non-slip polishes for floors, if they can’t be carpeted, above all, making sure there is enough light. The older you get, the more light you need to see properly. An old person may need four or five times as much light as a child to see as clearly, even wearing spectacles. It is rare to find a home with enough light, especially in corridors and on stairs. Stairs, for example, fatally trip 700 to 800 people a year, most of them old. A 60-watt bulb just is not bright enough.

Young children, too, have special problems. Nearly 200 are accidentally smothered(使窒息) each year in bed. Many of the hundreds of cases of accidental poisoning each year are of children, and the commonest source of all fires in the home is a child playing with fire or with matches. The government tried every possible means to prevent them from happening.

B) Falling is the fatal cause of death for the old. C) Ways of guarding against falling. D) Children’s problems.

A) The author provides a lot of details about the problems of the old.

B) The author lays much emphasis on the details so as to bring out the importance in ways of preventing the old from falling.

C) The problems of children are not fully discussed as those of the old.

D) Children’s problems, comparatively speaking, are more serious than the old’s. 44. According to the passage, which of the following is true?

A) People pay enough attention to lighting their rooms, especially the corridors and the stairs. B) Corridors and stairs are usually dimmer than rooms.

C) People pay less attention to giving enough light to the corridors and stairs, let alone the rooms.

D) A 60-watt bulb is just bright enough.

45. The tone the author used in this passage is . A) subjective B) objective

By the end of this century this may not be mere __48__. Scientists are already looking for the __49__ of using some of the available ice in the polar regions. In these regions there are vast ice-caps formed by snow __50__ over the past 50,000 years. Layer __51__ layer of deep snow means that, when melted, the snow water would be pure, not salty __52__ sea-ice would be. And what useful packages it would come in! It should be __55__ to cut off a bit of ice and transport it!

__56__ perhaps a passing iceberg could be captured. They are always breaking away from the main caps __57__ around, pushed by currents, until they eventually melt and are wasted. Many icebergs are, of course, far too __58__ to be towed any distance, and would melt before they reached a country that needed them anywhere. It would be necessary to __59__ one that was manageable and that was big enough to provide a good supply of ice when it __60__ us. Engineers think that an iceberg up to seven miles long and one a half miles wide could be transported __61__ the tug pulling it was as big as a supertanker! Even then they would __62__ only 20 miles every day. However, once the iceberg was at its __63__, more than 7,000 million cubic meters of water could be __64__ from it!
