I was telling my boy Sonny the story of the hare and the tortoise. At the end I said, “ Son, remember: Be slow and steady, and that will win the race. Don’t you think there’s something to learn from the tortoise?”

Sonny opened his eyes wide, “Do you mean next time when I’m entering for the 60-metre race I should wish that Billy, Tony and Sandy would all fall asleep halfway?”

I was shocked, “But the tortoise didn’t wish that the hare would fall asleep!”

“He must have wished that,” Sonny said, “Otherwise how could he be so foolish as to race with the hare? He knew very well the hare ran a hundred times faster than he himself did.”

“He didn’t have such a wish,” I insisted. “He won the race by perseverance (坚忍不拔的), by pushing on steadily.”

Sonny thought a while. “That’s a lie,” he said. “He won it because he was lucky. If the hare hadn’t happened to fall asleep, the tortoise would never have won the race. He could be as steady as you like, or a hundred times steadier, but he’d never have won the race. That’s for sure.”

I gave up. Today’s children are not like what we used to be. They’re just hopeless. 46. The writer argued with his son because ______________. A. he liked tortoises while his son liked hares

Last Friday, at least 5 people were killed by lightning in Nepal.

Lightning strikes are the second most common cause of deaths during natural disasters in the US. The first is floods. Around 400 people nationwide are struck by lightning each year, and of those, 70 people die. That is, more people are killed by lightning than by tornadoes and hurricanes. Because lightning kills only one or two people at a time, its danger does not receive as much attention as other disasters.

\you hear the thunder, you are in danger from lightning,\said Rocky Lopes, a disaster educator at the American Red Cross.

\means that lightning is close enough to hit you at any time, so you should move indoors immediately and stay there until the storm has ended. The most important thing to remember is to seek shelter, \

Summer is the peak time for lightning storms, so when lightning strikes across the sky, remember these safety tips:

? Stop working, fishing, swimming or playing in open fields. ? Do not stand under a tree.

? Get off bicycle and motorcycles.

? Crouch down (蹲下) if there is no shelter.

? Avoid open spaces, wire fences, metal objects and electrical objects such as hair driers. 51. In the US, _________ is the most common cause of deaths during natural disasters. A. lightning B. tornadoes C. hurricanes D. floods

For the past six weeks I have been having online writing classes. I had never taken an online class before, so I did not know what to expect. Now I am about halfway through the courses, and I am doing three courses, where I am practicing writing.

These creative writing classes have been somewhat similar to those I took in a middle school. There are weekly readings where we have to discuss our thoughts, and we comment on each other’s work. But there are some differences. In my middle school, I had one novel writing class where we all sat in a circle twice a week and discussed each other’s work. Each person had a copy of the story but the author of the story was always anonymous(匿名的). This allowed people to give honest opinions since there was no face to connect to the story.

The creative article course is held in a computer lab and all of our work is done online. Every week, two people read their stories aloud to the class, and then we spend a few minutes discussing them, and then post comments on the online discussion board. Still, the main benefit of an online class is that I can choose when to turn in my homework. This allows me to choose how to manage my time. GkStK

I think taking three creative writing courses at one time may have been a little too ambitious, but I am studying a variety of writing styles and I think I am becoming a better writer for it. 56. How long do the online writing classes that the author is taking last for in total? A. About twelve weeks. B. About two months C. About six months. D. About six weeks

57. What do the author’s online classes and school classes have in common? A. Students have classes in a computer lab. B. Students sit in a circle twice a week. C. Students write novels every day.

D. Students discuss their reading every week.

58. Why was the author of the story anonymous during the discussion? A. Because students didn’t want their work popular.
