When a leafy plant is under attack,it doesn't sit quietly. Back in 1983,two scientists, Jack Schultz and Ian Baldwin, reported that young maple trees getting bitten by insects(虫子)*send out a special smell that neighboring plants can get. These chemicals(化学物质)* come from the injured parts of the plant and seem to be a warning. What the plants pump*(喷出)through the air is a mixture of chemicals known as volatile organic compounds(VOCs).
Scientists have found that all kinds of plants give out VOCs when being attacked. It's a plants way of crying out. But is anyone listening? Obviously. Because we can watch the neighbours react.(反应)
Some plants pump out smelly chemicals to keep insects away. But others do double duty. They pump out perfumes(香味)*to attract different insects who are their natural enemies. Once the insects arrive, the tables are turned. The attacker who was lunching now becomes lunch.
In study after study,it appears that these chemical conversations help the neighbors. The damage is usually more serious on the first plant, but the neighbors stay safer because they heard the warning and knew what to do.
Does this mean that plants talk to each other? Scientists don't know. Maybe the first plant just made a cry of pain or was sending a message to its own branches(树枝)*,and so, in fact, was talking to itself. Perhaps the neighbors just happened to hear the cry by accident and so wrong information was exchanged.
Charles Darwin, over 150 years ago, imagined a world far busier, noisier and closer than the world we can see and hear. Our senses are weak. There's a whole lot going on.

When a storm is coming, most people leave the area as quickly as possible and head for safety. But there are a few people who will get into their cars and go straight for the center of the storm. These people are willing to risk being killed by floods*(洪水)or 100-kilometer-an-hour winds for the excitement of watching the storm close up.
Storm chasing(追逐)*\of the United States, where there are frequent storms between March and July. A storm chaser begins the day by checking the Internet for the latest weather reports, and then drives up to 1, 000 kilometers to where the storm will be and waits for it to develop.
Although anyone can do it,storm chasing is extremely dangerous. The power of a big storm can throw a cow into the air or destroy a whole house in seconds. Storm chasers are also often hurt in accidents caused by driving in a heavy rain. If you are a beginner,it is much safer to join a group for storm-chasing vacations during the storm season.
Even then, storm chasing is not all adventure and excitement. \\Daniel Lynch, who spends most of his summer storm-chasing. \you can sit around for hours waiting for something to happen, and all you get is blue sky and a few light showers. \
However, for storm chasers,it is all worth it. \exciting sight you will ever see in your life, \the power of nature. It is the greatest show on Earth. \
