Itwasalongfouryears.EvenafterIhadactuallygraduated,thenightmaresbegantohauntme,theuniversitywouldcalltosayIhadn’ttrulygraduated.TherehadbeenamistakeandtherewasjustonemoreclassIneededtotake.Iwasalwayssorelievedtowakeupandrealizethatithadonlybeenabaddream.Inreality,Ihadpletedeverycourseneededformydegree,andIwasafull-fledgedcollegegraduate!

Now,therestofmylifeloomedaheadofme.Sometimesabachelor’sdegreepreparesyouforaspecificoccupation——youtraintobeanaccountant,yougraduateandgetapositioninanaccountingfirm.Often,however,yourstintincollegeonlypreparesyoutomakefurtherdecisionsregardingyourfuture.You’reprettysurewhatyoudon’twanttodo!

Duringmysenioryearofcollege,Ihadtoyedwiththeideaofchangingmy

major.Atthatpoint,Ihadfinallydiscoveredwhatcapturedmyheart.But,wantingtofinallybefinishingschoolwasastrongerpull.So,Itookafewcoursesinphysiologyandexercisescience,butnotenoughtoreceiveadegreeinphysicaltherapy.Thatwouldrequireadvancedschooling,beyondmybachelor’sdegree——andIjustwasn’treadytotacklethat.HavingpletedmyB.C.degree,Ididn’thaveanyintentionsoffurtheringmyeducation.

So,Ididthesafethingandgotanofficejob——theverythingIwassurethatIdidn’twanttodo!Idetestedtheofficepolicies,thesuitsIhadtowearandthedowntownenvironmentthatIhadtodrivetoeveryday.IknewthiswasnotwhereIbelonged.

Butgodknewwhatpathmycareerwastofollow.Apositionopenedupatthemostexclusivehealthclubinourcity,soIapplied.Thiswasmykindofenvironment——anactive,vibrantkindofplace——pletelyattheoppositeendofthespectrumfromtheofficeenvironmentwhereIfoundmyself.ThepositionrequiredthatIworkSaturdaynightsandSundaymornings.Perfect,Ithought!IcouldkeepmyofficejobMondaythroughFridayandworkatmydreamjobontheweekends.Thisarrangementlastedseveralmonthsuntil,eventually,afull-timepositionopenedupandIwasabletoresignfrommyofficejob.

Overthenextfewyears,Iworkedmywayuptheleader,gainingexperienceinseveraldifferentdepartments.Ifoundmynicheasthedirectorofmemberservices——cateringtoourclienteleandprovidingthemwithnumerouscutting-edgeprograms.Iwouldhavestayedatthatjobforever——itseemedtobethepinnacleofallmydreamsfulfilled.HerewerefellowemployeeswhohadapassionforthesamethingsthatIdid——healthandfitness.Yetagain,godhadotherplansformylife.Withintwoyears,anewer,bigger,betterandmorestate-of-the-arthealthclubfacilitywasbuilt——justfivemilesdowntheroad.And,inturn,theownerlostmanymemberstothatclub.And,inturn,theownerlostthousandsofdollars.Onebyonewewereeachlaidoff.
