C These days, most people in the UK and the US wear informal( 非 正 式 的 )clothes. But sometimes it is important to wear the right thing. Many British people don't think about clothes very much. When they go out to enjoy themselves, they can wear almost( 几 乎 ) anything. At theatres, cinemas and concerts you can put on anything you like: from beautiful suits(套装)and dresses to jeans and sweaters. Anything goes, but you should look clean and tidy(整洁的). But in the UK, as well as in the US, men in offices usually wear suits and ties and women wear dresses or skirts (not trousers). Doctors and business people always wear quite formal clothes. And in some hotels(宾馆) and restaurants men have to wear ties and women have to wear tidy dresses.

In many ways, Americans are less formal than British people, but they are more careful with their clothes. At home, or on holiday, most Americans wear informal or sports clothes. But when they go out in the evening, they like to look nice. In good hotels and restaurants, men have to wear jackets and ties, and women have to wear pretty clothes.

It is difficult to say exactly(确切地)what people wear in the UK and the US, because everyone is different. If you are not sure what to wear, watch what other people do and then do the same. You'll feel good if you don't look too different from everyone else.

idea. They don't know if these people taking the meals are really in need of help or just out for a free lunch.

Also, how do we know the restaurant owners won't just pocket( 隐 藏 ) the money and keep the food? This is really a trust issue. In fact, it's sometimes difficult to decide(决定)if we should give a beggar(乞丐)on the street a little money. Maybe they really need our help. Alice spends her summer vacations walking back into history. Alice is 15 and she is a guide who shows visitors around the Fort(城堡)Delaware Museum in New York. “This year, I spun wool(纺毛线) on a spinning wheel. Last year, I was a candle maker. In My first year, I cared for the garden and looked after the animals. All the jobs I’ve had at the fort have been really fun.”

Fort Delaware is a living-history museum that shows how life was in America frontier(边远地区) in the mid-1700s.“Reading about history can’t compare(比较)to experiencing(体验)it for yourself,”says Alice. The experience begins as soon as visitors enter the fort. The smell of wood smoke fills the air. The guides show visitors how the settles(移民)would have carried out(展开)everyday work. “Kids are surprised when I tell them that one of their jobs would have been to make candles,” says another guide, 16-year-old Jane. “They don’t realize(意识到) that kids back then had to work hard.” She also shows visitors how to play with toys and games. They are playing historical parts, so the guides can’t wear shorts or T-shirts when the weather is hot. But the clothes of the past can easily change modern kids into people from 18th century. “The clothing felt strange at first, but it does make it easier to get into characters,” says Jane.

Working at the fort has helped Jane to appreciate(感激) her life even more. Alice agrees, “The fort has taught me how hard life was and how much work there was every day.
