Their research included chemistry, medicine, physics, mathematics, engineering, and computer science—almost every area of science.
Forty high school students were invited to the capital city Washington for the final judging. A team of scientists judged them on their research abilities, Critical thinking skills and creativity. The judges also questioned the students about scientific problems before deciding on the winners.
The top winner received 100,000 dollars for college. Shennon Bab of American Forc High School studied the water quality of tile Spanish Fork River in Salt Lake City for six years. She found that people have a harmful effect on the river through human activity, including agriculture. And she suggested ways to improve the water quality in the future. These include educating the public not to put household chemicals down the drains(下水道), which lead to the river eventually.
Yi Sun a boy of 17 from the Hannker School in San Jose, California, earned the second place. He won a 76,000 dollar scholarship for new discoveries about a mathematical theory known as random walks. His work could help computer scientists and chemists. Yi Sun was born in China.
The winner of the 3rd place was also 17 years old and born in China. Yuan “Chelsea” hang of Montgomery Blair High School in Rockville, Annapolis, won a 50,000 dollar scholarship. She researched the molecular genetics(分子遗传学)of heart disease. Her findings could aid the development of new medicines.
The Intel Science Talent Search is American’s oldest science competition for high school students. It is 65 years old this year. The winners in the past have already gone on to receive six Nobel prizes and some other top honors in science and math.

An increasing number of health, hunger, and sustainable (可持续的)agriculture groups today announced plans for Food Day-a nationwide campaign to change the way Americans eat and think about food. This nationwide campaign will encourage Americans around the United States to sponsor or participate in activities that encourage Americans to “eat real” and support healthy, affordable food grown in a sustainable, humane way.
Organizers expect Food Day inspires American people to hold tens of thousands of events in schools, college campuses, houses of worship and even in private homes aimed at fixing America’s food system. A Food Day event could be as small as a parent organizing a vegetable identification contest at a kindergarten class-or as massive as a rally(集会)in a city park, with entertainment and healthy food. Health departments, city councils and other policy makers could use Food Day to launch campaigns, hold hearings, or otherwise address communities food problems.
The campaign will advocate progress toward five central goals
·Reducing diet-related disease by promoting healthy foods. The American diet is too low in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and too high in fatty meat, soft drinks and salty packaged and restaurant foods-contributing to hundreds of thousands of premature deaths each year.
·Supporting sustainable farms and stopping subsidies to agribusiness. Billions of federal dollars a year would be better spent helping environmentally conscious family farmers than huge agribusiness operations.
·Expanding access to food and alleviating(缓解) hunger. Far too many Americans don’t know where
their next meal is coming from, or have access(方法) to fresh produce in their neighborhood.
·Reforming factory farms to protect animals and the environment. Farming of animals can and should ·Curbing junk-food marketing to kids. Food companies should not be targeting children with foods be done without cruelty, and without degrading the quality of life. that promote tooth decay, obesity and other health problems. 66.What is the best title of the text?
A. Eat Real and eep fit C. How to Observe Food Day A. Food problems are not easy to deal with. B. Food Day events should be held in public places. C. People are invited to create their own Food Day events. D. indergarten kids are unable to identify vegetables. A. target children with junk food
B. operate more agribusiness B. Food Day Campaign D. Food Problems in the USA
67.What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
68.One of the purposes of Food Day is to __________.
C. cancel a series of events D. increase access to food A. enlarging
B. controlling
C. evaluating D. providing
69.The underlined word “curbing” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to “__________ “. 70.We can infer from the text that __________.
A. Food Day can be an opportunity to solve food problems B. Food Day will not help preserve natural resources C. Food Day has so far achieved all the central goals D. there are different ideas and views about Food Day

When we talk about a library, we may think of shelves and shelves lined with books. But a new library set to open this fall in Texas won’t have any books ---- at least not the kind you can leaf through..
There will be 10,000 digital books available for loan(借出)in the BiblioTech library in Bexar County, Texas. About 1.7 million county residents will be able to check out the books online without leaving their homes. The library will also provide 100 e-readers for people to borrow. In the library, people can work, study and access the Internet using dozens of computer stations.
“We wanted to find a cheap, effective way to bring reading and learning to the county and also focus on the change in the world of technology,” Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff, the man who started the project, told reporters.
Digital-only academic libraries already exist in the US. The University of Texas at San Antonio opened the first in 2010, and officials say it’s been a success. Many public libraries even offer digital books in addition to paper copies. But Biblio Tech will be the country’s first completely paperless public library system. Tucson, Arizona, and Newport Beach, California, attempted to open bookless public libraries in 2002 and 2011, respectively, but both ended up offering paper books after public outcry.
However, Residents of Tucson and Newport Beach lived close to libraries and could easily get to them. Many areas of Bexar County, on the other hand, lack public libraries, so residents don’t have easy access to books. Wolff hopes Biblio Tech will solve that problem. Critics argue against digital-only libraries, saying many people prefer to see and hold actual books. Some say books with pictures, such as children’s books and how-to books, work better than digital books. Others say people who aren’t comfortable with technology won’t be able to use the paperless libraries. They also point out that many digital books are not available for libraries to purchase for their collections.
But supporters of digital libraries say these institutions will make books available to more people, like the residents of Bexar County. Wolff himself, who collects print books, says he doesn’t intend paperless libraries to replace traditional ones, but to exist alongside them. “People are always going to want books,” he says. “But the world is changing.”
71. Wolff hopes to open more paperless libraries across the country, if Biblio Tech succeeds .What do we know
about the Biblio Tech library?
A. The first 10,000 people can read the digital books for free. B. It will provide about 1.7 million digital books for the readers. C. People can read the digital books at the library or at home. D. It won’t provide the loan service for people out of Texas 72. From Paragraph 4, we can infer that __________.
A. Officials in the US helped build the digital-only academic libraries. B. The first digital-only academic library opened in 2002 in the US C. Other attempts at opening digital-only public libraries have failed. D. The University of Texas once tried to open a bookless public library. 73. What does the underlined part “that problem” in Paragraph 5 refer to? A. People in Bexar County can’t read books easily. B. Tucson and Newport Beach lack public libraries. C. There aren’t digital libraries in Bexar County. D. Residents aren’t comfortable with technology.
74. What are the reasons why critics are opposed to digital-only libraries?
a. Some people enjoy seeing and possessing printed books. b. Books with pictures work better than digital ones.
c. Some people aren’t good at using the Internet. d. The prices of some digital books are too high. A. abd
B. abc
C. acd
D. bcd
75. From what Wolff said in Paragraph 7, we learn that __________ . A. The future of print books is controlled by readers B. Digital books will take the place of print ones soon C. People will lose their interest in reading books in the future D. Paperless libraries and the traditional ones should coexist 第四部分 写作 (共两节,满分35分)

Each person has a dream and he (or) she obeys the rule that if you can dream it, you can achieve it! Here are four goals for persons to reach a perfect life in their future.
The 1st goal that is common to us all is health and energy. We all want to be healthy and fit, to have high levels of energy and to live free of pain and illness. Today, with the incredible advances in medical science, the quality of our health and fitness, and our lifespan, is largely determined by design, not by chance. People with excellent health habits are far healthier, have more energy, and live longer and better than people who have poor health habits. Remember that health is not everything, but without health everything is nothing!
The 2nd goal that all of us have in common is to enjoy excellent relationships – intimate(亲密的), personal or social – with the people we like and respect, and who _____ in turn. Fully 85% of your happiness will be determined by the quality of your relationships at each stage, and in each area, of your life. How well you get along with people, and how much they like and respect you, have more impact on the quality of your life than perhaps any other factor.
The 3rd goal that is common to every one of is to do work that we enjoy, to do it well, and to be well paid for it. You want to be able to get and keep the job you want, to get paid more and promoted faster. You want to earn the very most that is possible for you at each stage of your career, whatever you do.
The 4th goal we all have in common is to achieve financial independence. You want to reach the point in life where you have enough money so that you never have any financial worries. You want to be completely free of them. You want to be able to order dinner in a restaurant without referring to the price listing to determine what you want to eat.
