Part IV Chinese & Foreign Culture Introduction
Task One
Mencius was born in Zou State (present Zhoucheng of Shangdong Province) during the Warring States Period. His father died when he was quite young, so he lived with his mother. Living close to a cemetery when he was a kid, Mencius often imitated the rites which he saw in funeral processions or burial services for amusement. Seeing about this, Mother Meng decided that the place was no good for her son’s education, so they moved their house.
Later, they moved to a place neighboring a boisterous street. Mencius, seeing the merchants and vendors hawking their goods, began to imitate their behavior. \not the right place to raise my son either,\
In the end, they moved next to a school. Inspired by what he saw and heard, Mencius naturally started to imitate the courtesy behavior and study habits of the students. Observing the change of Mencius, Mother Meng decided not to move again and settled down there.
Task Two

Part VI Academic Writing: Revising the Rough Draft
Task
This introduction has too many themes: Women are victimized by men; women should stand up to men; women’s roles are still affected by the inequality of the past; to get along in the world, women must show a willingness to accommodate men. The student was advised to focus her research on, and develop one point.
Here’s the rewritten introduction:
Today our society enforces femininity by certain unspoken threats, and if a woman tests the limits of her gender beyond a certain point, she will lose the approval of women as well as men. For example, if she is viewed as pushy, assertive, aggressive, and selfish, she may lose her job, her boyfriend, and alienate her family. Moreover, a woman who dares to oppose this patriarchal system risks being perceived as both unfeminine and undesirable. That is why some women have resigned themselves to playing a narrowly prescribed role in this male-dominated drama. But this
unacknowledged principle of surrender to masculinity has become too costly for women of this generation to continue engaging in it.
With the thesis now plainly stated in the last sentence, the introduction is clear and sharp.
Part VII Developing Skills: Argumentation Writing (IV)
Task
Environmental challenges, ranging from smog in cities to toxic groundwater to the Antarctic ozone hole have been presented to us. I believe that many of these challenges should be met with collaboration across national boundaries. Environmental concerns should be dealt with through joint efforts from countries for two main reasons.
The first one is now problems such as oil spills and dust storms are so widespread that they can hardly be confined to one single country or region. Thus, it is crucial that these problems be solved with international efforts. What is meant by this is each country and person should be made aware of their unique role in environmental protection. The second reason why joint effort is essential is that each country has its own weaknesses in environmental protection. For instance, even though the industrialized countries possess advanced technology and the financial resources for environmental preservation, many of them cannot solve the serious problem of emission induced by climate change because reducing this problem may slow down their industrial production and lower their people’s comfort and convenience.
Accordingly, nations and international organizations have their roles to play in ensuring that the rich countries fulfill their environmental obligations.
