I started learning English when I was 7 in Japan. The first few years were really difficult. I had to learn words and grammar rules, which didn’t seem to have much sense for me at that time. I completely didn’t feel the need to learn English.
Everything changed after I went to the USA for the first time at 18. I was impressed by the Grand Canyon, the Sonora Desert, and as a little girl, I liked Disneyland very much.
From the earliest childhood, I’ve been taught by qualified teachers, either at home or in high school, not to mention the university. I think that this is of great importance especially for young learners as they are likely to learn wrong things very easily and later it takes a lot of effort to correct those errors.
My teachers focused on all aspects of the language: grammar, vocabulary, spoken and written English. When I was younger they used to show me what were the best ways to practice a language. Nowadays, I watch many English films and American programs on TV, and read English books. To practice new words, I write essays which include new interesting words.
Such exercises help me a lot when I have to answer difficult questions or deliver a speech. I use many exercise books to practice grammar. However, I hold the opinion that the most natural way to practice grammar is to talk, write essays, etc. Of course, you have to know the grammar rules first. All in all, I must admit that I like spoken English best. Maybe it’s because I’m a quite talkative person.

The cowboy has become the hero of many movies. He is, even today, believed to have courage and adventure. But what was the life of a cowboy really like?
The cowboy’s job is clear from the word “cowboy”. A cowboy, according to dictionary explanation, is a man who rides a horse and whose job is to care for cattle. The cattle were in the West and in Texas. People in the cities of the East wanted beef from these cattle. Trains could take the cattle east. But first the cattle had to get to the trains. Part of the cowboy’s job was to take the cattle hundreds of miles to the railroad towns.
These trips were called cattle drives. A cattle drive usually took several months. Cowboys rode for sixteen hours a day. Because they rode so much, each cowboy brought along about eight horses. A cowboy changed horses several times each day.
The cowboys had to make sure that the cattle arrived safely. Before starting on a drive, the cowboys branded(给---烙上印) the cattle. They burned a mark on the cattle to show who they belonged to. But these marks didn’t stop rustlers(盗窃牲口的人), or cattle thieves. Cowboys had to protect the cattle from rustlers. Rustlers made the already dangerous trip even more dangerous.
Even though their work was very difficult and dangerous, cowboys did not earn much money. They were paid badly. But cowboys liked their way of life. They lived in a wild and open country. They lived a life of adventure and freedom. 24. A cowboy’s job is ______.
A. to send beef to the city people C. to take care of cattle A. to the East from the West C. to the people in the cities 26. Cowboys enjoyed themselves because ______. A. they could live a free life full of excitement C. they had a very difficult job

Have you ever had the strange feeling that you were being watched? You turned around and, sure enough, someone was looking right at you!
Parapsychologists (灵学家) say that humans have a natural ability to sense when someone is looking at them. To research whether such a “sixth sense” really exists, Robert Baker, a psychologist (心理学家) at the University of Kentucky, did two experiments.
In the first one, Baker sat behind unknowing people in public places and stared at the backs of their heads for 5 to 15 minutes. The subjects(受试者)were eating, drinking, reading, studying, watching TV, or working at a computer. Baker made sure that the people could not tell that he was sitting behind them during those periods. Later, when he questioned the subjects, almost all of them said they had no sense that someone was staring at them.
For the second experiment, Baker told the subjects that they would be stared at from time to time from behind in a laboratory setting. The people had to write down when they felt they were being stared at and when they weren’t. Baker found that the subjects were no better at telling when they were stared at and when they weren’t.
B. they made a lot of money D. they were heroes in movies B. to be a hero in movies D. to brand the cattle B. onto the trains D. to towns by the railroad
25. During a cattle drive, cowboys took the cattle ______.
Baker concludes that people do not have the ability to sense when they’re being stared at. If people doubt the outcome of his two experiments, said Baker, “I suggest they repeat the experiments and see for themselves.”
27. The aim of the two experiments is to ________. A. explain when people can have a sixth sense B. show how people act while being watched in the lab C. study whether humans can sense when they are stared at D. prove why humans have a sixth sense
28. The underlined word “outcome” in the last paragraph most probably means ________. A. value B. result C. performance D. connection 29. In the second experiment, the subjects _________.
A. could tell when they were stared at and when they weren’t.
B. could tell when they were stared at but couldn’t tell when they weren’t. C. couldn’t tell when they were stared at but could tell when they weren’t. D. couldn’t tell when they were stared at or when they weren’t. 30. What can be learned from the passage? A. People are born with a sixth sense.
B. The experiments support parapsychologists’ idea. C. The subjects do not have a sixth sense in the experiments. D. People have a sixth sense in all places.

Experts say it is not easy to get used to life in a new culture. “ Culture shock” is the term these experts use when talking about the feelings that people have in a new environment. There are three stages of culture shock, say the experts. In the first stage, the newcomers like their new environment. Then, when the fresh experience dies, they begin to hate the city, the country, the people and everything else. In the last stage, the newcomers begin to adjust to their surroundings and, as a result, enjoy their life more.
There are some obvious factors in culture shock. The weather may be unpleasant. The customs may be different. The public service systems---the telephone, post office ,or transportation --may be difficult to work out. The simplest things seem to be big problems. The language may be difficult.
Who feels culture shock? Everyone does in this way or that. But culture shock surprises most people. Very often the people having the worst culture shock are those who never had any difficulties in their home countries and were successful in their community. Coming to a new country, these people find they do not have the same established positions. They find themselves without a role, almost without an identity. They have to build a new self-image.
Culture shock causes a feeling of disorientation (迷惘). This feeling may be homesickness. When homesick, people feel like staying inside all the time. They want to protect themselves from the strange environment, and create an escape inside their room for a sense of security. This escape does solve the problem of culture shock for the short term, but it does nothing to make the person familiar with the culture. Getting to know the new environment and gaining experience--these are the long-term solutions to the problem of culture shock.
31. According to the passage, the more successful you are at home, _________________. A. the fewer difficulties you may have abroad B. the more difficulties you may have abroad C. the more money you will earn abroad D. the less homesick you will feel abroad
32. Which of the following is NOT right according to the passage?
A. “Culture shock” is a term used to describe the feelings that people experience in a new environment
B. In the second stage of “Culture shock”, people may hate the life in the new environment C. When you are homesick, you had better not stay at home all the time D. Every one of us doesn’t feel culture shock in this way or that 33. What is the main idea of the last paragraph? A. Escape unfamiliar environment B. The feeling of homesickness
C. The best way to overcome (克服、战胜)culture shock: get familiar with the new culture D. Homesickness can solve the problem of culture shock 四、任务型阅读
Congratulations! You are about to start a multi-faceted(多面的) journey of exploration. You are about to enter high school as a freshman. And here are some tips on how to start a new year at a new school.
As a high school freshman, choose courses that suit you. I encourage you to take a few courses with the title “Honors”, because they are meant to be challenging and intellectually exciting. If you are hungering for knowledge, see if you can take Advanced Placement (AP) course(大学预修课)---courses that may allow students to earn college credit(学分) for performing satisfactorily in the AP exams held nationally every May. AP classes such as AP Environmental Science and AP Human Geography are well-known for being easy, so taking either of them would be a perfect way of getting yourself into the AP program deeply.
Try to find a balance between in-school activities and out-of-school activities. An imbalance will surely cause you to be stressed. If you love sports, consider trying out for the various sports teams your school offers. Exercise is a great way to stay in shape, learn proper time management, gain new friendships, and keep your mind away from school day stress. Also consider joining your school’s band or some other clubs your school offers. Most importantly, be a part of activities that you are fond of.
If you’re a high achieving student, you’re probably asking yourself, “ What should I do to get into a top college?” The truth is that when most colleges judge your college application, they don’t focus on your freshman year grades or extracurricular activities. Freshman year of high school is supposed to be a time of exploration—a time to find out your favorites and to develop them in the future. However, the method to apply to (申请)colleges is sometimes confusing, so you would benefit yourself by at least knowing the types of standardized tests you need to take before applying to college. The best resource for this is “ The College Board”, the company that creates the college entrance exams you will take in the future.
