Wilkie Collins was born in London in 1824 and his first novel — a historical romance called Antonina 装 号证— was published when he was 26. An author of many mysteries, Dorothy L. Sayers considered The Moonstone to be “probably the finest 级班detective story ever written”, and many people agree with her. There are several reasons why they think so. One is that Collins uses different characters to tell each section of the story. The characters have very

different personalities and voices, which are interesting and often amusing. There are also several features of

If you are given only 1 yuan, could you live in a city for one day? It seems this may be a little difficult. But students from Xi’an did it.

On April 10, more than 60 students from the Middle School Attached to Northwestern Polytechnic University took part in the One Yuan Metropolis Survival. The charitable organization for teenagers called Imperceptible Education held this activity. Students not only have to live, but they also have to deal with a lot of hard tasks. It has happened in eight cities and is going to four others, including Beijing, in June.

To make money, many students looked for part-time jobs and saw how hard life was. Zhang Queue, 14, asked more than 10 restaurants for a job and finally got one chance. “We were sad when they said no. But gradually (逐渐地), we got used to it,” he said. After being a waiter for an hour, he got 25 yuan.

Some made use of their talents by singing and dancing in parks or shopping malls. Many people who walked by took notice and helped them. Zhao Jincheng, 14, drew pictures and made paper crafts(手工). “This showed it’s important to learn a special skill,” he said.

Living was hard, but finishing the tasks wasn’t any easier. They went to different places to finish tasks in a short time. The most amazing one was when they had to exchange things worth thousands yuan with only a piece of paper in half an hour. “We learned how to persuade others. From a balloon to a cake to a bottle of yogurt(酸乳) … after almost 20 tries, we got an expensive necklace,” he said. They will give all of the money they made to poor schools in Tibet.

What are your retirement plans? Keep working? Get more exercise? Or learn something new? You may put them on hold. There’s a chance that, sooner or later, you might have to move further than you were thinking, as far as mars.

On Thursday, National Geographic will show the first-ever Mars show home, giving earthlings(地球人) an idea of what their life could look like on the Red Planet. In the not-so-distant year of 2037, the igloo-shaped structure could be the home of your future.

It shows a house built using recycled spacecraft(航天器) parts and Martian soil, called regolith, which has been microwaved into bricks. Some parts of the home are recognizable — a kitchen, a bedroom — but there are fundamental differences that are important to human survival.

As the Martian atmosphere is around one hundredth as thick as the Earth’s, people will need permanent(永久的) shelter from the sun; society will move largely indoors. Most buildings will be connected by underground passages and the houses won’t have windows. The homes will have simulated solar lighting, or natural light that has been bent several times.

Walls will need to be 10 to 12 feet thick to protect people from dangerous rays(光线) that can pass through six feet of steel, and a double air-locked entrance to keep the home under proper pressure.

“We don’t think of our houses as things that keep us alive, but on Mars your house will be a survival centre,” says Stephen Petranek, author of How We’ll Live on Mars. This is not just the stuff of sci-fi. “10 to 20 years from now there will certainly be people, on Mars.” Petranek says.

“We’ve had the technology for 30 years to land people on Mars, but we haven’t had the will,” Petranek says. But two main factors have “completely swung public attitudes”.

The private companies’ participation has forced government agencies to speed up their game, and influential films such as Gravity and The Martian have caught society’s eye. 28. What can we know about the show home from the text? A. It has no windows or doors due to security concern. B. Its design presents the idea of environmental protection. C. It has thick walls keeping the home under proper pressure. D. Its underground passages connect all the building together.

29. What do the underlined words “put them on hold” in Paragraph 1 probably mean? A. Put them off.

B. Give them away. C. Carry them through. D. Take them seriously.

30. According to Petranek, what has sped up the process of sending people to Mars? A. The great influence of the Mars show home. B. The development of related technology.

C. The competition from private companies. D. The popularity of influential books on Mars. 31. What is the best title for the text? A. Living on Mars: Possible or Not B. Sending People to Mars: Yes or No C. First-ever show home: How Is It Made D. Future Home on Mars: What Will It Be Like

The death of languages is not a new phenomenon. Languages usually have a short life span (寿命)as well as a very high death rate. Only a few, including Egyptian, Chinese, Greek, Latin, have lasted more than 2,000 years.

What is new, however, is the speed at which they are dying out. Europe’s colonial rule caused a sharp decrease in languages, reducing at least 15 percent of all languages spoken at the time. Over the last 300 years, Europe has lost a dozen languages, and Australia has only 20 left of the 250 languages spoken at the end of the 18th century.

The rise of nation-states has also been decisive in selecting national languages. By making great efforts to establish an official language in education and the media, national governments have tried to reduce minority languages.

This process of language standardization(标准化)has been improved by industrialization and scientific progress, which have created new methods of communication that are fast, straightforward and practical. The various kinds of language came to be seen as an difficulty to trade and the spread of knowledge. Monolingualism (单一语言制)became an perfect choice.

More recently, the internationalization of financial markets, the spread of information by electronic media and other aspects of globalization have led to the danger to “small” languages. A language not on the Internet is a language that “no longer exists” in the modern world. It is out of the game.

The serious effects of the death of languages are clear. First of all, it is possible that if we ended up speaking the same language, our brains would lose some of their natural functions for language inventiveness. We would never be able to figure out the origins of human language or resolve the mystery of “the first language”. As each language dies, a chapter of human history closes.

Multilingualism(多语制)is the best reflection of multiculturalism. The destruction of the first will lead to the loss of the second. Creating a language without any links to a people’s culture and way of life stifles the 精品 文档 可修改 欢迎下载

expression of their language gift. A language is not only used as the main instrument of human communication. It also expresses the world view of those who speak it, as well as their ways of using knowledge. To safeguard languages is an urgent matter.

32. Which of the following does not contribute to the death of languages? A. Colonial rule from Europe. B. The rise of nation-states.

C. Advance in science and industrialization. D. The increase of human population.

33. The underlined word “stifles” in the last paragraph probably means “________”. A. cheers B. kills C. creates

D. improves

34. The serious effects of the death of languages include all except that ________. A. people would fail to understand how languages started B. monolingualism would lead to the loss of multiculturalism

C. the death of languages would become a difficulty to realize globalization D. human brains would become less creative in languages 35. What is the author’s purpose of writing this passage?

A. To draw people’s attention to the importance of language preservation. B. To warn people of the negative results of globalization. C. To explain the reasons why languages are dying out.

D. To argue how important it is for people to speak more languages.

第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Where is your focus(集中点)as you work towards your goals?

If you are moving towards something you are focused on, then it grows bigger in your sight. It pushes out the things around it that will stop you from achieving your goal. However, if you are not moving towards a goal, but running away from something, then where you really want to be can get lost in the surroundings (周围的事物). 36

A personal example is when I was working as a programmer. I had a manager that had little technical skill, and bad management skills. 37 In fact, I did apply for another position. After my first interview,

I realized that I was running away from a position but not having a specific(明确的)goal. If I had continued, I would have ended up in another job that I didn’t really want.

38 In doing so, I now have a specific goal that I am working towards. When I achieve that goal, I will be exactly where I want to be.

When you want to change, first ask yourself if you are moving towards a specific goal. 39 Forward progress is good. Progress from a bad place is a good start. But progress in this manner will not lead you to where you really want to be. 40 Only then will your effort and energy take you to your desired place.

A. I had to give it up at last.

B. Or ask if you are running away from something. C. So I wanted to get out of that position quickly.

D. And where you want to be will seem small and unimportant. E. You must focus on that goal, not on what you don’t want. F. In order to do that, you must have a very specific goal to focus on. G. Instead, I decided to stay a little longer and see what I really wanted.
