Growing older. These words used to strike fear in the hearts of old men and women, who imagined days spent in nursing homes and lack of control over their lives. Truthfully, there are few people who do feel comfortable with the thought of growing older. For most people, who experienced the height of their economic and political power during their fifties, entering the \golden years\can be a disappointment.
But it may not be that way forever. Actually, society as a whole is now beginning to discover the bright side of old age. Even if a person is over 65, it doesn't mean he or she will suddenly become useless. Social workers stress the fact that the old people are the sum of their life experiences and do not suddenly change just because they have reached the age of 60 or 65.
Social workers have divided the elderly into two basic groups: young old---people aged 60 to 75; and old old---75 to 100. These groups have also been broken down into other categories. Of the two main groups, the young old are better off. They are more likely covered by a pension, and generally have good health. People aged 75 and older may not have the financial benefits this group is enjoying and are also more likely to develop diseases. “When it comes to discipline, our society has gone from one extreme to the other,”says Ron Moorish, a behavior specialist. “We used to use the strap, to intimidate. Then we had permissiveness, and now it’s about giving children choices and allowing them to learn from their own experiences.”
Real discipline, says Moorish, is about teaching. “By correcting our children when they do something wrong, we teach them how to behave properly,”he says. But this only works, he emphasizes, if parents regain their position of authority. Children will always be children. The key is for parents to choose to take the time

to guide and teach their kids.
Rita Munday, a mother of four children, couldn’t believe the dramas that played out in the children’s shoe store she operated. She often saw children insist on having the high-priced, brand-name shoes. And even when the mother didn’t want to spend the money, she would give in when the kid started acting up and throwing shoes around.
Rhonda Radice, Munday’s younger colleague, is one parent who has bucked the trend and is proud of it. “I don’t negotiate with them. You can’t. I’ve seen parents come into the store and bribe their children to behave. You shouldn’t have to buy love and respect.”
