Review on Fire in Winter
In the late 1980s, a popular song swept across the entire nation and brought closer connection between people cross the strait, which is called Fire in Winter by Fei Xiang .
To be more specific, it was not originally produced by Fei, but actually a cover of Sexy Music from a British band-The Nolans. But seen from the background of the time and society, the song definitely coveys a lot more messages.
As Huang stated, “Music is so strongly linked to politics.” Music is the social product that can certainly reflect some political aspects. Connection between people across the strait has been greatly deepened due to the implementation of Opening up policy, in which literature and artistic communication became more frequent than it it was before. Fei was then recognized as a Taiwanese singer and his performance on the stage was absolutely a signal that the central government was hoping to ease the stress between two officials. Encouraged by the official, people were then changing their habit of listening habits. Huang believed that “Social alienation and dislocation were expressed in mass consumer culture” which means that the close connection between the two officials led to the change of the social life including consuming music. The choice for music from Taiwan is a representation of recognition of the compatriots.
