制作之前，为了使南瓜灯看起来更美观，最好先将南瓜外皮冲洗干净。然后，将报纸铺在地面或桌子上，以免制作过程中被南瓜汁弄脏。接着，用小刀在南瓜顶端(带把儿的一端)切出一个圆形的洞。
注意，刀子应该以45度角切入南瓜，如果垂直下刀的话，被切除的部分会直接落入南瓜内，不容易取出。
此外，还应注意切出的圆洞大小一定要容许将手塞进去。被切除的部分也不要急着扔掉，因为它将是南瓜灯的“小盖”。
