Over the last few years, I have found that one of my favourite things to do in my free time is volunteering (做志愿活动). I often volunteered for many different volunteering groups. Last year, I took dogs for walks at an animal centre. This year, I run activities for children at an after-school club at weekends.
No matter what kind of volunteering, I have always loved it and I would tell others to give it a go. Here is my top three reasons (理由) why I think volunteering is so meaningful. 1. It helps you to get experience and skills (经验与技能).
By volunteering, you are carrying out a job－though you can't get money－so you can get lots of experience and skills which would be useful in the future. For example, many volunteering jobs will help you to get experience in working as a team. 2. You can meet new people.
One of the best things about volunteering is meeting the other volunteers ! Some of them are very interesting people and might just turn out to be great friends too. 3. It's a way to get confidence (信心).
Many volunteers say that it helps them to feel more confident, in all kinds of ways. For example, I'm always quite a shy person, but my volunteering experience helps me to get confidence in talking to people I don't know and even in front of lots of people！
These are just a few of the many reasons why I suggest (建议) that you look for ways to volunteer in your town or city. Remember that any kind of volunteering is good volunteering. If you like, you can start with something small and who knows what it will lead to! The most important thing to remember is that as well as helping others, you can get a lot too！
