I spent the 31 of 2010 living in South Africa. On weekdays, I worked to help children with AIDS; on weekends, I went sightseeing, from Durban to Cape Town to Victoria Falls.

But if you asked me what I really 32 in South Africa, I would tell you one thing: I listened. I listened to a Nigerian taxi driver's memories (回忆) of his fifth birthday; I listened to a German talk about the beaches of Brazil; I listened to a 20-year-old co-worker tell about his weekend; I listened to a South African tour guide's talk about the start of her travel company. I listened, and I listened. And sometimes I spoke ... but mostly I listened.

And if I had not spent two months listening, I might have missed the moment a little girl, who lost parents at three, whispered (低语) after a long silence, \that, if I had not learned to listen.

Playing a musical instrument

Playing a musical instrument (乐器) is a great hobby (爱好) to have. I started playing the piano when I was five years old and still really enjoy it now: it's a great way to relax and cheer me up when I'm feeling down. When I lived at home with my parents, we had a lovely brown piano in the house. I learned to play the piano for five years and I had piano lessons every week.

When I went to university, I had to leave my piano behind. But I wanted to play the piano so much. I spent all the money I had on a new e-piano. It was quite difficult to get it from the music shop to my house: I had to take a friend with me to get it into a taxi and then carry it to the door. I was very glad I bought it though. I was able to play whenever I wanted. When I was studying or writing a paper, I used to take a break to play something. It really helped me become happy again! When I was feeling a bit homesick, playing music that I learned on my old piano made me feel better.

Now I am on my year abroad (在国外). Unluckily, I don't have a piano any more. I wish that pianos were as easy to move as guitars because I really miss (思念) spending time on my hobby. When I go home for Christmas, I will drive my family mad (疯狂的) because I will play the piano all the time. It probably won't sound very nice because I haven't had any practice! 39. How did the writer learn to play the piano?

A. His mum taught him. B. He had piano lessons. C. He learned by himself. D. He learned with friends. 40. When did the writer buy a new e-piano?

A. At the age of five. B. When he lived with parents. C. On his year abroad. D. When he was at university. 41. What does the writer want to tell us? A. It's boring to play the piano. B. It's difficult to get a piano. C. It's great to play an instrument.

D. It's important to play the piano every day.

Ten years ago, many people thought that the age of the physical books was coming to an end. The books have been our companions (陪伴) for hundreds of years, but they thought they were surely about to die out. Soon, we would all be reading on little screens and forgetting about the places called \

But it seems that the ideas of the death of the book are much too exaggerated (夸张). At least in the UK, as a newspaper found, sales of e-books are going down but sales of physical books are rising. More surprisingly, it's young people who are buying the most physical books. More than 60% of 16-to-24-year-olds like print books better than e-books. The most popular reason that they give is: \

Physical books become very personal to lovers of reading. It often starts with the way they get them. Many buyers of books like to write their name on the first page when they just buy one. And we carry books around with us everywhere.

If the book gets a dog-ear or there's a stain (污点) on the pages from coffee or food, all these make the book-our book-even more personal. It's as if readers of physical books make friends with them.

Of course, some could say that the modern stuff (现代化的物品) on which people read e-books, like Kindles and iPads, are also things that we really enjoy. But it isn't quite the same. A Kindle can hold as many pieces of writing as a whole library. But a story we remember turning its pages in our favorite armchair enters our memory forever. Physical books are as precious (珍贵的) to some readers as their favourite presents or photos of family members.

This \情感的). A study shows that readers remember more information from physical books than from e-books.

However, I'm sure that e-books are here to stay. They aren't simply \here today, gone tomorrow\stay, too.

42. What did many people think about books 10 years ago?

A. E-books would die out finally. B. Only e-books would be in libraries. C. Physical books would stay with us. D. Physical books would come to an end. 43. What do the words \physical books\A. Physics books. B. Paper hooks. C. E-books. D. PE books.

44. According to the passage, people like physical books because ________. A. they are very easy to carry and to read B. they like the coffee stains on the pages C. they are more personal and are like friends D. they are always very cheap and easy to get
