Just finishing loading his car, my husband Jerry went back to the kitchen. “I guess filling my thermos(保温瓶) is all I have left to do, and then I?m off.” Down the drain went the hot water that had been warming his thermos.

With a nostalgic(怀旧的) look on his face, he softly said: “Anytime I fill my thermos I think of your mom.” The tone in his voice was so tender as he spoke of my mother, who is sadly no longer with us.

“Oh honey, I know she?s watching and listening right now with a big smile on her face, ”I responded, tears in my eyes.

One morning years ago when we were leaving, mother watched as Jerry was to fill his thermos. Mom then casually said, ?Jerry, if you filled your thermos with hot water and let it sit a while, your coffee would stay hot for longer then.” With her simple suggestion, his face showed that he was shocked by his own lack of common sense, well, of course it would!

He poured out the small amount of coffee already in the thermos and refilled it with boiling hot water. Then he poured the water and refilled it with hot coffee. Mom smiled as Jerry did so.

NEW YORK---- Family members gathered on Wednesday evening for the funeral of Eric Garner, who died shortly after police put him in a banned chokehold as they arrested him in Staten Island of New York, where the death has cause anger and a promise to reform police training.

Garner?s wife, Esaw Garner, entered the Bethel Baptist Church in Brooklyn, supported by two young boys, looking upset and exhausted. After her followed six children of the family.

Garner?s dying moments on a Staten Island sidewalk last Thursday were recorded on by bystanders. Mayor Bill Blasio, who was elected partly because he once promised to mend the worn relations between New York police and the local ethnic minorities, has called the death a tragedy.

In the videos, Garner, who was black, can be seen arguing with several police officers arresting him suspected of selling untaxed cigarettes outside a beauty parlor.

Moments later, he was down on the sidewalk with an officer?s arm around his neck, pleading(恳求) repeatedly that he couldn?t breathe. After he fell down, at least seven minutes passed without any apparent attempts at medical help.

The Staten Island district lawyer and the police department?s internal affairs are investigating Garner?s death.

The city?s police have been banned from using the chokehold for more than 20 years because it can be deadly, particularly when used on someone who is overweight, as Garner was.

Two of the police officers involved have been put on desk duty and four emergency response workers were suspended without pay. Actually, a complete check of police training was started on Tuesday, focusing on the proper use of force.

C. what has been done so far in response to Garner?s death D. New York police should be responsible for Garner?s death. 46. What?s the main idea of the passage? ____

C. Police training must be reformed D. Black people can hardly avoid tragedies.

Researchers may have discovered a perfect material of dieting ----low fat cake and cheese.

British researchers say they have created a protein (蛋白质) that mimics the taste and texture of fat perfectly.

The proteins will enable food producers to remove much of the fat used in their products but without reducing product quality.

Funded by team from University of Edinburgh, the researchers have produced the modified (调整了的) proteins that easily break down and therefore work nearly the same as the fats do during food production.

“We?ve paved the way for the development of modified proteins that can be used to produce a wider ranger of appealing low-fat foods,” said Dr. Steve Euston, who led the research.

“The result could be important for health benefits, as well as a reduction in the burden on the National Health Service (NHS) caused by many weight-related health problems.”

Protein-for-fat substitution (替代品) is not a completely new idea, but to date it has been limited to products such as yogurts.

In cheeses and cakes it has proved less successful in ensuring the original taste and texture fundamental to consumer satisfaction, mainly because proteins could not mimic the behavior of fats closely enough.

By studying the proteins? chemical structure, the team has developed a detailed understanding of how proteins behave when they are heated or go through other food producing processes.

The proteins could encourage development of a wider choice of low-fat foods, helping consumers to eat more healthily and reducing weight-related health problems.

The team has achieved particularly promising results in using proteins to replace eggs, which is commonly used in bakery items.

Such substitution not only cuts fat content; because eggs can be subject to sharp changes in price, it could also cut the cost products and so encourage consumers to eat more healthily. 47. What can we learn from the passage?____ A. The NHS will benefit from this new finding. B. the research team is funded by food producers.

C. Protein for fat substitution is a completely new idea. D. Products of modified proteins have been put on sale. 48. The underlined word “mimics” probably means _____.

·6·

A. reduces B. makes C. removes D. imitates 49. These new proteins work nearly the same as the fats do because _____.

A. they will cut fat content easily B. they will break down easily

C. their products are cheaper and healthier D. they ensure the original taste and texture. 50. Which of the following is best title? ____

A. A Special Protein B. How Proteins Work

C. Cut down the Food Cost D. A special Research Team.

One of my wonderful memories is about a Christmas gift. Unlike other gifts, it didn?t come in stockings.

On September 11th, 1958, Mom gave birth to Richard. After she brought him home from hospital, she

·7·

put him in my lap, saying, “I PROMISED YOU A GIFT, AND HERE IT IS.” What an honor! I turned four a month earlier and none of my friends had such a baby doll of their own. I played with it day and night. I sang to it. I told it stories. I told it over and over how much I lived it!

One morning, however, I found its bed empty. My doll was gone! I cried for it. Mom wept and told me that the poor little thing had been sent to hospital. It had a fever. For several days, I heard Mom and Dad whispering such words as “hopeless”, “pitiful”, and “dying”.

Christmas was coming. “Don?t expect any presents this year.” Dad said, pointing at the stockings that I hung in the living room. “If your baby brother lives, that?ll be Christmas enough.” As he spoke, his eyes were filled with tears. I?d never seen him cry before.

The phone rang early on Christmas morning. Dad jumped out of bed to answer it. From my bedroom I heard him say, “What? He ?s all right?” he hung up and shouted upstairs. “The hospital said we can bring Richard home!” “Thank God!” I heard Mom cry.

From the upstairs window, I watched my parents rush out to the car. I had never seen them that happy. And I was also full of joy. What a wonderful day! My baby doll would be home. I went upstairs. My stockings still hung there flat. But I knew they were not empty; they were filled with love. 56. How old was the writer when Richard was born?
