Introduction

Gone with the wind has been hailed as a triumph of American literature. Scarlett is the protagonist of the novel. She is the daughter of Tara’s master. She is not beautiful but very charming. Scarlett inherited her aptitude for math from her mother and her strong will from her father. In her whole life, she only wants two things, one is Ashley and the other is Tara. She would do everything to help Ashley and to protect Tara. But after Melanie’s death, Scarlett came to her sense and found that the one she really loved is Rhett. But Rhett has leaved her. She said to herself: tomorrow is another day and want to get him back. The novel depicts a picture of the social life of the south of America and describes the change of the America during and after the civil war. Under this background, Scarlett changed from spoiled teenager to hard-working widow to wealthy opportunist. Every coin has its two sides, Scarlett is only human and not perfect, and she has her own advantages and disadvantages. She is self-centered, selfish and pragmatic. However she is brave, energetic and realistic, and sometimes she showed her kindness. As far as I’m concerned, it’s her complicated character helps her acclimatize herself to the social environment and makes her a successful woman. This article will analyze the complicated character of Scarlett O’Hara and her attitude towards love, marriage and life.

chapterⅠ The selfish Scarlett

Scarlett O’Hara is a realist and very selfish. She live her life rationally, she decides what constitutes success, finds the most effective means to succeed and does not consider concepts like honor and kindness. We can see it from her attitude towards marriage and life. A. Scarlett’s attitude towards marriage

To Scarlett, love is not the foundation of marriage. She marries with men just in order to get money or to resolve the living problems. She always tried to manipulate the people who love her and never care about their feelings. At first she married Charles who was Melanie’s brother, just want to hurt Ashley. And besides, Charles could give her great house and beautiful carriage, which would make other girls envy her. When Charles dead, she didn’t feel heartbroken, she’s unhappy just because she can’t dance with other boys. When Tara faced the danger of being bought away by the others, she lures her sister’s lover Frank and marries him. She didn’t care about her sister’s feelings and only wants to pay the tax. After the Frank’s death, she said to Rhett: money does help, you know, Rhett, and god knows Frank didn’t leave any too much. Then, she married Rhett, for this, she didn’t need to worry about the money and could have a better life. After their marriage, Rhett loves her and dotes on her. He gives her all supports he can. He encourages her to shun social custom and gives her money to start her own business, but Scarlett never loves him back. B. Scarlett attitude towards life

Scarlett is a hybrid who exhibits more of her Irish father’s hard-headedness than her mother’s refined southern manners. Before the war, she lived a rich and comfort life in the South. Scarlett is a dark-haired, green-eyed beauty but is well spoiled. Wherever she goes, she wants to be the center. She sees all the girls as enemies and believes every man around the village must fall in love with her and she can’t endure the talk without a topic of her. During the war, she didn’t mind the success or failure of the war, or the death of solider. She only cared about dance and Ashley. At the hospital, she hated the smell and didn’t want to take care of the solders. After the war, she became a selfish and greedy capitalist. She employed prisoners to work f

or her for less expenditure but more profit. She sent out her money as a loan and traded with black men for money and she even cleaned up the money from widows. She didn’t care a snap for Rhett’s advice and said: it is more easily to earn money from the poor people.

ChapterⅡ The unyielding Scarlett

Though Scarlett has a lot of shortcomings, she is still very attractive. Her attitude towards love, life and her loyalty to Tara mirrors her perseverance, her brave and her self-trust. If she desired for something, she would do as much as she could to achieve it. She never said give up and believed she has the ability to fix all the problems. If she believed something is right, she would insist on it and didn’t care the floating rumors. The unyielding Scarlett’s development mirrors the development of the south, she adapts wonderfully to the harsh and opportunistic world of the new south, and she saved Tara and had her own mill. Scarlett’s success proves that woman has the same intelligence and brightness as men. Even the women from modern time should learn from her, should have the courage and ability to pursuit love and to pursuit happiness. A. Scarlett attitude towards love and friendship.

1. Scarlett’s love to Ashley

Because of her attitude towards marriage, people say Scarlett didn’t understand the truth of love. However, in my opinion, she is the one who really understand what love is. Love is selfless. She loves Ashley and tries her best to help him .She didn’t mind his indifference and take care of him. Love is selfness, she wants to have Ashley, and so she hates Melanie and wants her die. Love is the motivation of life, when she is helpless, she would think about Ashley and gain the courage to solve problems. She understands love, strives for love, and lives for life. Pitifully, her love is blindness; she loves the wrong person and made her
