When James Leininger began to have vivid and terrifying nightmares as a 2-year-old boy, his parents were understandably concerned. What made these visions so strange was the fact that they were always about the same thing. The toddler would blurt out phrases such as, “Plane on fire!” at an age when he was barely capable of stringing proper sentences together. By the age of three, he could supposedly describe the intricate workings of fighter jets. It soon transpired that the child believed he was a pilot named James Huston, Jr. who had been shot down and killed by the Japanese during World War II. As hard as it seems to believe, Leininger was allegedly able to recount many details of the incident in which the pilot died, including the name of the aircraft
carrier and the location. His parents are now convinced that he is in fact the reincarnation of James Huston, Jr. and they are apparently not alone. Leininger’s incredible story has become a bestseller and has been translated into 10 different languages.
43. Which of the following statements is true about Leininger? a. His story is a hoax. b. He has strange visions. c. He became a jet pilot. d. He can speak Japanese. 44. Who do Leininger’s parents believe he is? a. a toddler b. his father c. a dead Japanese pilot d. a dead soldier
45. According to the excerpt, why is Leininger’s story so convincing? a. He knows a lot about flying. b. He knows details of someone else’s life. c. He can recall historical facts. d. All of the above. 46. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the word intricate? a. complex b. alleged c. reincarnated d. terrifying

Esther, 33, Dubai
I opened up a chain of fitness centers across the Middle East starting in 2004. Although the majority of people I work with and meet are incredibly friendly and easy to get along with, there are way too many men who have a completely messed up view of Western women. By Islamic standards, Dubai, is pretty liberal, but even there, many men see European or American women as loose and easy to pick up. Before all the recent troubles in Egypt, I traveled there, and I have to say that some of the behavior I experienced was shocking. It seemed that almost everyone I met thought that I was promiscuous because I was a single white woman traveling alone. Xiao Ping, 24, London
I’d always heard that Englishmen were gentlemen and that people in England had good manners, but this image did not seem accurate when I was studying in the U.K. as a graduate student a couple of years ago. I suffered racist abuse from random strangers on more than one occasion. Some of them would call out to me in the street, putting on a ridiculous Chinese accent and asking me to cook them fried rice or noodles. And while I made lots of friends at the university, many of them assumed that I was a typical Chinese student who was all work and no play. Sometimes they would ask for help with work, saying, “Well you’re Chinese, so you must be smart.” Of course, they didn’t mean to be unkind, but I found it frustrating sometimes.
47. According to the excerpt, which best describes the Middle East attitude toward Western women? a. Women are available and easy to get along with. b. Women are extremely brave to travel alone. c. Most are Islamic and would love to meet an Islamic man. d. No information is given. 48. According to the excerpt, which of the following statement is true? a. People in Dubai are shocked by foreign women. b. People in Dubai tend to be open-minded. c. British people all have excellent manners. d. Many British people like to cook noodles or rice.
49. What generalization did Xiao Ping encounter? a. All Asians have London accents. b. All Asians are racist. c. All Asians study hard. d. All Asians attend graduate school. 50. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the word promiscuous? a. troubled b. liberal c. incredible d. loose
