Jaime, a new immigrant (移民者), was attending his daughters first performance in a school play. His daughter, Carol, was six years old. She was a student at a school. Carol did not have a very big role in the school show. She was playing a rain cloud in a play about the dry weather in California. Carol had one line. Her line was, “I am sad enough to cry about how dry the state is.” Jaime and his wife made sure to arrive early so that they could get a good seat in the hall. They found seats in the row. Before the show began, the headmaster made a speech .It was about how hard the students and teachers worked together to make the play possible. At the end of the speech, the headmaster said, “Let's give the school staff a hand.”

Jaime, whose English was not very good, stood up when the headmaster said this. He knew that when people said “to give a hand” they meant they needed help. Jaime always wanted to help, especially at his daughter’s school. He thought maybe they needed help backstage (后台). Jaime's wife put her arm in front of her husband. “Where are you going?” she asked. “They need a hand,” Jaime answered gently. His wife explained that “to give someone a hand” could also mean “to praise someone.” They don’t need help. They just want us to clap(鼓掌), Jaim’s wife said. Jaime felt a little embarrassed and began clapping along with other students. Jaime thought to himself that someone needed to give the English language a hand. One-on-one online teaching for children, especially English lessons taught by teachers who are native (当地的) speakers, is becoming greatly popular in China.

On a weekend morning after breakfast in Beijing. Youyou, 7, a first-grade student, clicked(点击) an app on her iPad, greeted her teacher from America, and started her one-on-one English lesson at home. Every week she has two lessons, and each lesson lasts about 20 minutes. She has been studying in this way for almost three months. Her mother said, “She is getting used to this teaching way and learning the knowledge faster.” A recent report shows that online English education for children will have an explosive(爆发性的) growth, as more Chinese parents have realized the importance of learning English. Besides this way, many parents also send their children to study overseas at a young age. Parents born in the 1980s and even the 1990s are more open and willing to try new things than those born in the 1970s or earlier. For example, Li Li, 37 years old, said she finally decided to let her 8-year-old son take one-on-one online English classes because she was busy with her job and had no time to send her son to the offline class. Another online friend said, “I like the way of teaching which makes my son become interested in becoming the language by taking different activities such as conversations, games, singing and drawing.” One-on-one means the full attention from the teacher and children can get effective(有效的) learning. What was discovered by accident? The answer is penicillin(青霉素). It kills germs. By killing germs, it saves lives. Suppose you are sick. You go to a doctor. She examines you. She says you have a “staph” infection(葡萄球菌感染). She gives you some medicine. You take it. The medicine knocks out the staph. Soon you are well. Before penicillin, this would not happen. Staph was almost sure death.

Everyone wanted a medicine. Laboratories worked day and night. They grew the staph in small dishes. Then they tried to kill it. Nothing worked.

The laboratory dishes had covers on them. They kept things from falling into dishes. Molds (霉菌) were a big worry. They are always in the air. You can't see them. They’re too small. There are thousands of different molds. Molds can make an experiment fail. That's why dishes are covered.

Dr. Alexander Fleming was working to kill the staph germ. He worked for years. One day he took a cover off a dish. He looked inside. There was a thick growth of staph germ. There was also some mold. Then he saw something strange. Where the mold was, there was no growth of staph. This is what Fleming probably thought. “By accident, I found a mold to kill the dreaded staph.” This is how penicillin was found. But here's the real miracle(奇迹). There are thousands of kinds of molds. But only one kind can kill staph. The mold must have fallen into the dish a few days before. The cover was probably off only a few seconds (秒). In those few seconds the night mold fell into the right dish. Another man might have thrown the dish away. But Fleming was very careful and smart. He understood what the mold did. How lucky the humans were! 27. The underlined “dreaded” in Paragraph 4 means _______. A. famous B. scary C. healthy D. endangered 28. The last paragraph suggests that ______. C. the careless person may miss valuable chances. D. lucky is enough when doing scientific experiments. 29. Most of the passage is written by ________.
